Just be honest with them...."I really would prefer it if you smoked outside." Provide a seating area with an ashtray. And place small bowls of vinegar in the living room. The vinegar will absorb the smoke odor.

I smoke, but I certainly wouldn't smoke in someones home unless they told me it was OK.

It's up to you to let any guests know they can smoke outside, but that you have a smoke-free home. Just about everyone I know doesnt allow smoking in their homes anymore. You could try putting a little sign at the front door stating that fact. There are many cute little signs that say it with humor. I just spent a wonderful weekend at a big hotel that advertised they were a totally smoke-free place. It's your home and you deserve to have it treated the way you want it.

Your guests should already know how you feel about smoking in your house. If you have failed to make it clear from the beginning, then politely ask them to not smoke at all.

This is an easy one.
I am a smoker and I never assume that I can smoke in anyone's home anymore.
All of my friends and family of course know that I smoke and I know most of them have smoke-free homes.
If you know your guests are smokers when they arrive, you can simply tell them that because your home is smoke-free and you know that they are smokers, you have placed an ashtray (or whatever) in the garage or on a porch or by the backdoor so they can have a cigarette when they need one.
Nowadays, smokers are glad to have anyplace to go in order to have a cigarette. Just be polite and non-judgmental.

The best possible way to tell a guest that you want your living room air to be 100% smoke free is:
"Could you please not smoke in here? I'd like to keep this room 100% smoke free. Thanks."
The truth will never fail you...

Tell them that! You are trying to keep the air clean! Ask them if they would mind go outside to smoke! If they are respectful guests. They will have no problem doing what you request!

I would think that most smokers would ask for permission 1st, ,but with that said, I would simply say in a kind way, that smoking is not allowed, and offer them a ashtray to take outside, and smile while saying/doing this!

tell them to step outside your home or go out on the balcony whatever just not in your house if there's no where for them to go they'll just have to wait then anyone who smokes should appreciate the cleanliness of the world they might live in if they didn't smoke smoking is a filthy habit.

How bout a sign hung where all can see it and it says...Here is our only request, there is no smoking for the health of our guests! Kind of rhymes, gets the point across and let them go outside to smoke.

Just make sure you tell them right when they get there. It's ok to tell them no smoking in your house. They will respect it. If they don't then you can throw them out. When they arrive welcome them in and say something like, "I need to tell you first of all that I don't allow smoking in here." If there is a designated place for them to go you can then direct them to it and then move on to the regular conversation.

Show them by example how smoking pollutes things around it, find a old cotton tee shirt, have them take drags off of the smoke and then hold the tee to there mouth when the exhale and they will see the pollutants that come from smoke. BTW I am a proud ex smoker.
