My hubby recently started taxi-ing. Last night he took a girl into town, when they got there she asked him what he wanted and he was shocked and just told her to get out his car. Im annoyed, it was for over £10. He has a living to make and im wondering what he can do if it happened again? He thinks there is no point making a fuss as she might start shouting he did something to her and he thinks its better to lose the fare. Seems this girl never has to pay her fare with the other drivers and it angers me that the men let her do this. Legally, what could my hubby have done?

Im not sure driving her to the police station would be correct. Isnt that called kidnapping and wouldnt he end up in trouble with the police?

What this woman is doing is really a civil matter between her and your husband as she is refusing to pay for services that have been provided for her. This is something that the Police wouldn't deal with as it’s not a criminal matter. It would be a job for the small claims court.
Criminally, if she leaves the cab without paying then she is making off without payment, which is a criminal offence that the Police can deal with.
As for driving her to a Police station, you are exactly right in that this is technically kidnapping but false imprisonment would be a more appropriate offence. This is something that many taxi drivers do and is a real drain on Police time when we have to deal with it due to me having already mentioned that its a civil matter if she refuses to pay.
My best advice would be for your husband to make a note of her description and to refuse to take her anywhere if he sees her again. That might make her think twice when she ends up stranded! Alternatively, he could ask for payment 'up front'.
I can see your husbands point about not wanting to suffer accusations from this idiot. Unfortunately this kind of thing happens all too often with supposed rape victims 'crying wolf' with rape allegations which makes it extremely difficult for the real victims to be dealt with appropriately.
Hope this helps

I have been a taxi driver for 20 yrs and I have come across this problem but usually picking up late at night in the town. However if ur husband has picked this lady up at her home address the Police should be informed immediately and the drivers should not pick her up ever again. The latter is more difficult but again contact the police and office while she is still in the car, this action usually either she pays the fare or does a runner. Alternatively ask for a bond (jewellery, watch etc) if no cash and give a receipt and ask her to pay the office and will get her bond back. Always a difficult situation - fortunately these "ladies" are very few just have to realise who they are and not pick them up. ps the police are aware of what these ladies are capable of and will if need be prosecute fare dodgers as this is illegal.

I really think this one is best put down to experience..£10 isnt the end of the world to be taught a good lesson. Just make sure he doesn't take her in his car again.
My ex husband used to be a taxi driver and once he picked up a guy who went all over the place and ran up a bill of £44. He went into a house to get the money for the fare and never came out again. My ex got the police out who said there was nothing they could do, they rang on the door but nobody answered, they thought the guy had escaped round the back. Tell your hubby that's something else to watch out for hun.

Immediately take off going too fast for her to get out and drive to the nearest police station. Once there HE should start yelling about the fare.

I really think these situations would be few and far between, I would admire your hubbies restraint. There was a story a while back about a cab driver (wrongly ) accused of rape so I would consider myself lucky it was not as serious.

take her to the police station and explain, she will be forced to pay or arrested , payment usually comes pretty quick when the thought of a criminal record through soliciting/prostitution is likely

He could have called cops for theft of services in the US - don't know about the UK.
It will pay him to have a cheap, voice activated tape recorder or digital recorder in his cab to be able to refute charges of solicitation or assault.

your husband must be a good man to resist temptation i`m not sure what the laws are there but it seems to me it is just a barter deal services for services may not be moral but i`m not sure it is illegal maybe ask first how they intend to pay without offending the person

If he's not making a big fuss about you better be damned sure he didn't take it out in trade. Sounds like a coverup story to me. Otherwise drive her to the PD and they can deal with her skanky A#S!!!!
