While watching TV, I heard a small popping noise and the picture was replaced with a vertical rainbow colored line. I can hear audio - no pic. I also noticed an electrical smell when I got close to the tv. Any thoughts?

not the pic tube.
is a horiz deflection ckt problem.
u have high volts or u wouldn't see anything so the horiz osc is running.
the pop and smell might indicate a deflection coil.
if that is cemented to CRT than the pic tube needs replacing.
If not, or u find someone talented enough to get one from a bad tube and replace it, then just a coil - still probably $100 + job.
