I practice covers for Staind and Seether seeing how I'll be performing them at the talent show and I was wondering if someone could telll me how to sing better or at least sound like Arron Lewis or something.

Here are a few tips i've learnt from the past, by taking voice lessons..


If you really want to "Sing better.." First things first...Make sure before you sing, you warm up your voice first. Just like you wouldn’t jump into running a ten-mile race without first stretching and warming your muscles, give your voice the same courtesy. It is a good idea to develop a regular routine. Repeating your effective warm-up routine before each singing event will help prepare your voice.

Here are some specific tips to get you started: relax your body, do some proper breathing exercises to wake up your airflow and diaphragm, hum your favorite song and do some vocal sirens (slide up and down your singing range on the syllable “ee” imitating the sound of a siren).

Make sure you are breathing properly, which is through your diaphragm. When you sing, all your air should be comming from your diaphragm, your diaphragm is the "instrument" never sing from your throat, because the sound will come off as "falceto".

Also know your LIMITS. Don’t try to sing too high or too low, especially not right off the bat. You can also start off with singing a low song for your warm up, then increase it a note higher, and higher..

If you are trying to reach a high note, some people tend to hold their breath as they sing higher. LET THE AIR FLOW. You can also increase your breathing capacity by doing many different types of breathing exercises everyday.
ex. Inhale through your nose..taking as much air as you can..then slowly exhale through your mouth .. SLOWLY..making a "sss" sound. You will increase your lung capacity by doing that. Try doing that everyday, before you sing, after you sing, or when your just sitting watching t.v .. it really helps!

Oh and DRINK plenty of water! keep those vocals hydrated! Stay away from caffeine, alchohol, smoking, cold beverages, sweets.. because all that stuff is said to do damage to your vocal chords, and don't overuse or abuse your voice.
Don’t talk for extended periods of time, Don’t “talk over” loud noises, Avoid whispering. Whispering is said to do harm to your vocal chords as well. All of these actions are stressful to your voice and will cause vocal fatigue.

and most of all, just practice practice practice. Because practice makes PERFECT! =) Taking voice lessons with a proffesional music instructor is definately worth it ! They can work on you one on one, and really see where your vocal range is..and they will help you things that you need to work on the most. Otherwise, just go google it up for now and you will still find plenty of information you need to know.

We all have the voice we were born with but you can perfect it to a better quality. That won't happen if you smoke. Smoking destroys your vocal chords and that is why smokers sound so raspy in their voices. If you don't smoke, you can do voice exercises that will tighten your vocal chords so that you can reach higher notes if you are a soprano or tennor or lower notes if you are an alto or bass voice. Phlem that is caused by alergies and sinus problems is also a culprit against a good voice so to help you rid yourself of that problem if you have it, eat lemon because it breaks up the phlem. However, never clear your throat in a hard sounding noise. That action will damage the chords. Another culprit of having a good voice is fatty/sugary items like doughnuts with frosting or icing on the cake so refrain from those entirely or at least for a day or so before you publically sing and half a day before you practice. Deep breathing exercises is a good way to get better quality with your voice. The longer you can hold your breath for a sentence of singing and breath at the proper places in the song, the better the song will sound. And, learn to sing from your diaphram (stomach) and not from your throat. Then you won't sound nasely. To do that, also practice breathing from the diaphram and not the throat. In other words, your stomach should go in and out rather than your chest rising and falling when you are singing properly and that takes practice so that when you are on stage, you are consentrating on the song and not on the breathing because you have mastered breathing correctly and now do it normally. In case you are wondering, that is the correct way to normally breath in the first place because it fully empties out and fills up the lungs to allow more oxygen into your bloodstream. Practice staying totally relaxed as well. When we tense up when we are nervous, it tightens our vocal chords too and then we crack our voices or squeek. Drink plenty of water based fluids all the time because your vocal chords need to stay lubricated and that is how they do it. Avoid carbonated drinks because the gases in them force imporper air into the chords and you cannot maintain your proper breathing. Something to really work on for becoming an excellent singer is speech and volume. Make sure you complete each word you sing and make sure you do not slur them out of your mouth or lisp them out either. The reason for this is what you say may be understood by you but by the time it reaches the audience, it is even more jarbled so pronounciation and clarity is a must to a good singer. Volume means that you sing from the diaphram where you are breathing from so that your voice can be projected. And do not rely on the microphone to do that. They can pick up the voice but if you are still not singing loud enough, your words will lost their effect even with a microphone because they will sound hollow. You may not sound like Arron Lewis, but you will profect your own style that may be even better sounding if you produce the quality that is needed and practicing all the above things will definitely give you a very good chance at that. I have been a singer since I was a child, singing in front of people on stage. I have never desired to professionally achieve it, but I have been the lead singer in many bands over the years and had the lead in a good many plays as well as the solo's in lots of choirs because of this training. I was even the lead singer for a centenial quintet (southern dresses and all) for 5 years until we all went our separate ways with our own families. I know these things work.

comeon, how will you feel if you are on TV and people tune in a say you are just one copycat singer, i know you've got the voice, why don't you sing the Arron Lewis song sounding your best self and see what happens. Actually we are in the same shoes cos, i am also in for a competition, i went for the first audition and was selected amongst others, right now i am practicing a lemar song, and i really don't want to sound like him, cos i know if i put in my best to sound like myself rather than him, i will sound better than him. Take this from someone in your shoes...by the way, i have been taking honey, it helps the voice, and avoid taking too much milk cos it causes thick mucous to form in your throat, if you ever take milk try it maybe once in a while...and of course you know avoid cold drinks, i have not taken any thing cold for a year, and its really paid me, and lastly do not clear your throat continously its harmful. let me add here also that screaming to get to a higher note damages the voice, improve on your current note..bye goodluck

If you are serious about singing better, you need to take some vocal lessons. There is so much to learn about breathing, and muscle control and air flow, air pressure, air storage, and we haven't even gotten to actual singing yet. It takes time to learn this stuff. But if your looking for some quick instruction of basic stuff get The Zen of Screaming dvd from Melissa Cross, she teaches a very useful breath control method and it comes with a cd with warm up exercises. I know it's called the zen of screaming, but the method works for all singing styles. You can get the dvd at www.melissacross.com, her website also has some really good information on it, check it out. Hope it helps.
