I washed my flea kittens in Head & Shoulders. When I let the soap sit on them for 5 minutes, it killed the fleas. I would like to know if it kills the eggs too and how often I should wash them in it.

They are only 7 weeks (too little for Advantage, etc.) Thanks for all the responses tho.

I don't usually use human shampoo on cats as cats tend to be so sensitive to so many things, and I don't know what products are safe to use on my cats.

I doubt that Head & Shoulders kills flea eggs, as most flea products do NOT. You can read the product label. If it can kill the eggs, it WILL state that as this is a rare attribute and an excellent selling point for the product that can kill the fleas in the eggs as well.

What you did is drown the fleas. The soap prevents their escape, and they drown. Letting the kit sit with all that soap for 5 min was a great plan.

NOW...
Get a flea comb and comb the kitten thoroughly to comb those flea eggs out now. Do not repeat the shampoo. Anything that can kill fleas can be hard on the body if used TOO often. So use a comb instead.

Once you have combed the kitten 100%, then see how the flea situation looks.

If the kitten has been inside the house, you need to treat it's bed and may need to bug bomb the house as well.

Head and shoulders will not kill your kitten, but it also won't kill flea eggs. (it's more effective for eradicating ringworm) Bathing with any shampoo with kill some of the fleas, but you won't do enough damage to the flea population to rid your kitten of them. You need to use advantage, which you can get by visiting your vet. I don't recommend flea collars for kittens, as these allow the chemicals to seep into the kittens skin, and can cause medical problems. Speak to your vet, advantage is very effective, and not overly expensive! Advantage will kill the flea cycle, eggs and all. So your kitten will have quick relief. Remember to put a flea collar in your vacuum cleaner, and give your house a good vacuuming to kill fleas in the carpet, and prevent re-infestation. If you see cream coloured wiggly things that look simular to a grain of lice around your cats anus, she has tape worms, and need to see the vet. Fleas carry tape worm eggs in them, and when a cat ingests a flea the tape worm infestation begins. Tape worms survive on the food your cat eats-so they rob your kitten of valuable nutrients that it needs for growth. Tape worms rarely cause health problems in adult animals, but I'd be concerned about a ktten being infested. Go to the vets, bring a small fresh stool sample. (empty the litter, and wait for a fresh sample to show up) Remember to wash your hands every time you have handled your kitten.

hope that helps!
Enjoy your kitten :O)

Why are you washing your cat with Head and Shoulders?? Never use human products on pets. They made special flea shampoos for pets..but they are only effective in killing the fleas on the pet at the moment...they do not kill eggs or fleas that could still be around the house..and will simply jump right back on your cat. You need a long term flea control that will also kill eggs and any fleas that jump on your cat. Use Advantage or Frontline...these are both highly effective. And please...no more human products on your cat..they could kill him.

Head and Shoulders will kill the kitten.
To rid the fleas and eggs treat the kittens with Advantage or the like.

OK, here's something that a lot of people don't know, flea eggs do not infest your cats fur, they are very light weight opalescent things that more or less roll off of your cat, they do not adhere, you will find them in carpet and bedding, not on your cat. I learned that from a company that makes flea sprays for animals and houses, they have a 1800 number staffed by people that are experts on fleas. EDIT Advantage doesn't kill flea eggs either, because there are none on your cat, what it does is stop the flea from producing eggs the moment the flea contacts the advantage.

First off, buy a flea and tick shampoo for cats such as Frontline or Advantage. Head and Shoulders is for human hair not for cats with fleas. Make sure you wash the cat thoroughly for visible fleas. You may have to use tweezer since the buggers don't come off easily. Fleas can get into every part of your house and clothing if you don't kill them. You can get them too! Plus flea larvae is most likely inside the cat and you may see them again on the cat if you don't take care of it right away. You will notice if your cat has these inside his intestines by smell and by sight. Take the cat to the vet for a deworming.

honestly I've had cats my whole life..... you should not be using anything beside baby shampoo or what ever a vet tell you to use....if the kitten is that young it could get very sick from the chemicals in shampoos....be careful
