because to be accepted into modern society, people think that they have to abide by certain rules in order to be considered socially acceptable. being a decent size and weight is, in many societies especially western, one of these 'rules'
this is heavily conveyed through the media, and young girls and boys grow up thinking they have to look a certain way.
also, a lot of people dont diet and loose weight just to look good, they do it for health reasons. keeping active, eating rightand having a generaly healthy lifestyle significantly decreases ones chances of getting illnesses etc, such as heart disease and strokes.
people often want to loose '## pounds by such-and-such date' simply because its found to be easier to loose weight if you have a goal to reach, something to aspire to and look towards. if these people dont successfully shed the pounds by their set date then they know they have to step up their game. and if they do reach their goal, then it makes them feel really good and motivated.
its true, theres no hiding from the fact we are an image obsessed society, but you have to also understand that not everyone who wants a flatter stomach, healthier body and lessen their weight is doing it because of the pressures of society.

I've been fat for the better part of 20 years now. All along, the longing was to lose weight to be able to look sexy/attractive again.. to FEEL that way. However, I've screwed around long enough keeping myself overweight, that now it's become a health issue for me!
Now it's become... if I don't lose it and become more physically active, I am going to die... or at the very least, live life with a myriad of illnesses and restrictions.
Being over weight IS a health problem no matter what anybody tries to say to justify it...
Wanna live life with serious health problems that CAN be avoided or eliminated? Don't bother to lose weight.

Mostly it is vanity or trying to look like our favourite stars etc
And these days people have become very critical and judgemental of others and some folks worry what others think
The modern society expects a certain image should be maintained which is the problem with the world today,Everyone trying to change others or pushing their ideas on them
Some have to lose weight due to illness or disease or medical conditions etc

If you are happy and healthy then enjoy life and stuff what others think as you will never please everyone so why should we try

it is the constant repetition in the media. Those of power and control over what we watch/eat/sleep/think broadcast the images over and over again, through television, newspsper, magazines, cartoons, movies/etc.. If people could turn their attention to who they really are inside there would be less concern for such things.

But it is good to stay active and healthy although there is a fine line for that too, being different is what makes us unique and special in our own way.

its just a society idea -to be perfect-i am 5'9" tall and weigh about 220 lbs -i am not fat -to look at me -one might think that i caused a famine somewhere in the world-but i am very muscular- i have been called "burley,beefy--ect.. i am not one to lift weights -or work out in a gym or health club-i live on a small farm -and am constantly working -outside -doing manual labor -ex.moving stones -cutting wood-working with horses -and sometimes cattle --we are programmed from a young age -to do what society thinks is best -do a comparison to help you answer this question -compare 10- different farmers - to 10 city folk and see who is more uptight ? most farmers dont act like they just had 10 cups of coffee --

I've been a fat girl and I've been stick thin... I feel better when I'm thinner (not the disgustingly thin weight I was at one point, but a healthy weight for my height). My idea of body perfection is more Laila Ali than Nicole Ritchie. I don't really give a rats' *** what anyone else thinks of my body, as long as I'm happy with it.

Maybe its because so many people are FAT? Forget image. Its easier and more comfortable to get around and clothes fit better when you're lean.
