A 4WD Ram with the 4.7-liter and automatic transmission is rated to pull a 7450-pound trailer with the 3.92 rear axle ratio.
So those who need to pull trailers up to 8500 pounds will want to opt for the 5.9-liter engine
Put the 20" rims on there and subtract 1000 pounds from your pulling abilities
Most Ram buyers will get the new 4.7-liter V8, and it's the best choice unless you have good, specific reasons to order the 3.7-liter or 5.9-liter engine. The first thing I noticed about driving a Ram pickup with the 4.7-liter was its responsiveness. This truck feels very eager around town and on winding roads. It accelerates quickly onto freeways and has no trouble powering up grades. It's a smooth, sophisticated engine that always feels ready to go
The 4.7-liter V8 and 3.7-liter V6 are overhead-cam designs, smaller and more efficient than the overhead-valve engines they replaced.

Depends on how much more you want to increase it to. Without radical changes, your only options is to add a CAI and maybe tune it a bit more to get as much as you can out of the engine but that year V6 is pretty limited and tuning can possible mess the computer chip up. The newer Pentastar engine is a big more formidable, even with 3.21 gears it tows generically near 5000, add a few of the above mentions options and you could get that up to 5500, with 3.55 gears is head toward 7000lbs of towing, more than most of us is going to tow with a 1500. This V6 replaced the 3.7L and the 4.7L.

You could increase it slightly by installing the largest possible transmission and engine oil coolers, possibly lowering your rear axle ratio, and installing a weight-distributing hitch, but you can't turn it into a truck that's going to tow 20,000 lbs or anything like that, the engine and drivetrain isn't designed for it. ...
