I have a Nikon D40 camera and with all cameras I have owned, it's hard to take photos in a gym. Still photos are fine, as long as I am close to the subject, but action shots are hard to get no matter if I'm close or far away. With or without the flash, gymnasiums are hard to take photos in.

Visit the fotosharp.com site and order their Day & Night Exposure Guide. Here is the suggestion for: Ice Shows - White Spotlights; Sports with Stadium Lights

ISO 400, f2.8 @ 1/125 or f4 @ 1/60
ISO 800, f2.8 @ 1/250 or f4 @ 1/125

The suggestion for a monopod or tripod was a good one.

Yes, the light levels are very low in gyms and hockey arenas and they are difficult places to shoot.

Here are some things you can try:

- set your camera at the highest ISO (or AUTO ISO)
- open the lens aperture wide
- use a monopod to minimize camera shake
- use a VR lens (only reduces camera shake, not subject motion blur)
- use a very fast lens (50mm f1.2 or f1.4, 85mm f1.8)

It's not an easy problem so your solution may involve some or all of the above.

Good luck and I hope this helps.
