From the moment he wakes up until bedtime he eats (or tries to eat!!) fruit all day long. I suppose it could be worse, it could be sweets, but he does not have a daytime nap and it is difficult to get him settled at night time. I was wondering if maybe the sugar in the fruit was giving him a buzz!! any ideas?

Unlikely! My little one loves fruit too - but its always as a snack or dessert. we don't encourage eating anywhere other than in his chair in the kitchen!

It's unlikely that it's the fruit keeping him from napping and settling at night. However, that being said try giving him a bit of cheese or peanut butter & crackers as a nighttime snack instead. Protein tends to fill you up & might settle him a bit.

Both my kids stopped napping at 3 so it's not unusual that your son isn't. Nighttime is a test of wills that you need to win. Put him to bed, read a calming story, say goodnight & walk. It may take a couple of nights for him to get the idea that you aren't going to play in to his demands but it has to be done for your sanity.

Your lucky he likes fruit so much..yes, there is sugar in it..but fruit is so healthy..and the sugar is a natural sugar . I would'nt worry about that.

Is he getting enough full play time to run off all the energy a normal 3 year year old has? Does he get to the park every day to run, climb, jump etc?..A 3 year old has top be able to have much of his day to run as he wants, and use his large muscle skills. Set a routine for him..after lunch, and a full moring of him letting of steam..read a story..settle him in..and rest for a bit. make sure it is calm in the house then..same for night time..make sure it is not too early to sleep..and that he has been able to use his body as much as he can.. Read him a story or 2 before bed..just comfort him..relax him..set the tone..be calm yourself. Enjoy the moments...

What? You can never eat enough fruit!
Hes 3 he doesn't need a day time nap, maybe you arn't doing enough to tire hm out during the day, thats why he won't go to sleep, beleive me i have a 3 year old, and he has to be constantly on the go, otherwise im in bed before him!

Do yourself a favour and buy a super nanny book!

i have 3 kids and they all love fruit but u have to do the same as you would with sweets to much fruit can give him an upset stomache, and yes the sugar is most likely the reason he won,t settle at night. good luck

it could possibly be that although theres not alot of sugar in fruit but i suppose it could build up in alot of fruit intake my 3 year old loves fruit aswell but i just keep it up from her if she is going overboard with it my 3 year old doesnt have a day sleep anymore either but if your 3 yr old loves fruit you could give him sultanas they last longer because they drop half of them then they find them again or just chop it up in really small peices they usually pick up one or 2 bits at a time so if there is more it will last lopnger and so therefore less fruit is eaten in the day time sorry nif this was no help but thats just what i do

congratulations...you have managed to do what parents have been trying to do for years, encourage healthy eating!!

you dont want to cut out his fruit altogether, so try giving it at snack times and after mealtimes as a treat...he will still be getting enough goodness from it, but will also get the variety he needs.

fruit does contain sugar, but a natural type of sugar...not sure if the effects are the same as eating a bag of jelly babies and getting a sugar rush though...try speaking to your health visitor or gp for that sort of advise.

Yes fruits do have natural sugars and some have more than others. Some lower in natural sugars would be bananas, grapefruit, cantaloupe, berries, (blackberries, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries.) Peaches, pineapple, apples, honeydew, papya, pears, plums.
Higher in natural sugars are grapes, mango, oranges, nectarines, tangerines, watermelon, figs, cherries, dried fruit, passion fruit.
You might try before dinner and bedtime letting him eat only lower sugar fruits, it might help. Also fruit juices are very high in natural sugars.

maybe you son isn't tired why not try just waiting until he naturally drops off? give it a go my youngest brother never settled (I'm 9 years older than him so i clearly remember what he was like at 3) in the end my mum and dad just gave up and in the end he'd just fall asleep where ever he was so deeply my dad could carry him to bed with out waking him. this approach worked for my family why not give it a go for a few days?
you've got nothing to lose as far as i can see.
good luck

fruit contains natural sugars which can cause runny nappies if eaten too much during the day. limit the fruit to 2-3 times a day or more if you give him smaller portions. try mixing it with yoghurt kids love it but add more yoghurt than fruit.

All my 4 children love to eat fruit and they would eat it all day if they could, but i normally only let them have 3 pieces a day,

Normally a apple, Orange & banana. And if they still bug me for more i slice them a carrot or celery up to eat.

Have to say i much prefer them to eat fruit during the day than sweets, i only let them have a sweet at weekends as a treat.

you could also try limiting his fruit intake by saying he can only have it after lunch, then make him a lovely fresh fruit salad, that way he gets to eat all his favorite fruit but not as much as he would if he ate it all one by one

Give him yoghuts, or carrots etc to have as a substitute during the day.
