Believers in God don't even rate the FSM you mention, so popularity doesn't come into it. I understand your problem of belief in what you can't see in the flesh, but surely there are other things of a similar nature that you do believe in? Would it help if you thought of creation as the work of some incredible power, instead of using the term "God"? That power would be worth fearing.

The FSM isn't in the habit of threatening young children with tales of hellfire and demons. Also, followers of the FSM are sane, therefore they don't indoctrine their children in the ways of their invisable best friend.
