are you in the US , you did not mention which nationality you have ?
if you are an US citizen ? you do not need a visa for tourist visa for 90 days or less ..here is an Italian consulate in the US :

Initially telephone them, explaining your requirements. They will advice who to see and what time the respective dept in the embassy is open that deals with your enquiry + what docs etc you need to take and what docs the embassy requires filled-in to complete formalities etc.

Nowadays it is better to visit the website. You will know a lot eg. visa requirements, you can even download the application form by your self without being disturbed. You will know their office hours, address which is nearest to your place, tel/fax nos., duration of acquiring visa.
