Most won't give you a copy unless you ask.

It means that they keep your business. If you want yours to shop elsewhere , online etc, then they will give you it.

Law is a strong word. It is now normal practise to supply anyone on whom you have performed an eye test a copy of their prescription, cutting the link that obliged you to get your glasses from the optician that performs your eye test.

It depends on the law where you live whether or not they have to give it to you if you don't ask.

Any optician, anywhere will give you a copy if you ask for one.

they should give you a copy under the data protection act. duplicate copies can be charged for though and some opticians that can't run a proper business have introduced this now.

Actually, the law is that doctors are required to give you a copy of your prescription after you pay for the exam. You are NOT required to ask for it. They are supposed to just give it to you. The only exception is contact lens prescriptions. Contact prescriptions are released after you come in for your follow-up visit, not after the initial eye exam, but you are not required to ask for it.

Yes,you should be given your prescription after every eye test, regardless of the results, and you are not at liberty to purchase any glasses from the shop who tested your eyes either.
Its the law,so ask for it if they dont give it to you,and if they havnt given it to you,ask them why!

In the UK, at least, you're entitled to the prescription. You are the customer, that is what they're paid for. Just ask for it, they'll give it to you. A suspicious mind might think that they hope you don't realise you can take your prescription anywhere . . .

Yes but they don't really like to, because they know you can shop around and get the best price for your new glasses. My son took his prescription abroad and got his new glasses a lot cheaper.

You have to ask them if they dont give it to you when they do your eye test. Some give it to you automatically after they have tested your eyes, if they dont, ask them for a copy of your prescription.

If you ask for your prescription they have to give it to you; but only if your exam has been paid for. I work for an optician and we don't mind giving out the scripts; some of our best customers have gone somewhere else and have gotten glasses they were unhappy with.
