Is the military more lenient about letting people with asthma in into their branch when the recruit is joining a professional unit (such as a Medical corps)?

My asthma is under control, I don't use rescue inhalers, and the only noticeable effect is that it takes me longer to build cardiovascular endurance.

To add, I am not worried that basic will be to hard. My only hurdle is actually getting into the military with a diagnose of asthma.

Symptomatc asthma past age 13 is disqualifying for enlistment or appointment in the armed forces. However, a great many waivers are granted to those who are entering as physicians. Not medics. Not nurses. Physicians.

You go through basic for every field..not sure where that information came from! It will all depend on the seerity of the asthma. In most cases, asthma that needs daily inhalers and meds probably won't make it through your enlistment physical. You would be tough to deploy because of it and the miitary isn't prone to taking folks they can't send anyplace they need them. Medical deploys as much as infantry, so that is not a sit back and stay stateside kind of job. Truth is, most of the safe jobs don't exsist anymore...either they deploy as much as anyone else or they have been outsources to civilian contractors. If you have any doubts about your ability to run three miles with a pack on your back, then you need to re-think the choice of enlisting.

well with the air force i know that you dont go through basic training for professional fields.. if your asthma isn't that bad you might have a chance, but if they catch it at the physical exam it might be a problem.. i knew a guy who had a pronounced heart murmur but still enlisted and just didnt say anything about it and the doctor at the physical didnt even catch it so he joined and is already out no problem.

no. Physical standards are the same for all aspects of the military. Asthma past age 13 is a PDQ, no waivers authorized.

It depends on how bad the ashma is. You will more then likely be tested to see how bad it is and then evaluated from there.
