No you cannot because the baggage handlers don't like it ! It is a general rule of the airlines to only allow 20Kg in any one case so they don't injure themselves. Health and safety!
Having said that I have been well over the limit on the way home and been fine!

It is airline dependent, and there are quite often variences at each ticket counter. While one checker may allow a little over the other will stick to the exact weight.
This being said, most airlines allow any single bag to weigh 50 lbs maximum (roughly 20 kg) therefore if you present them with a 40 kg bag they will charge you overage for the bag regardless of the number of people using the bag. Also when travelling it is usually better to have 2 underweight bags, as you will most likely purchase items which will add weight to the bag when returning.

I went to the airport recently and someone had a bag over weight by about 5kg and they made them take it out and put it into another bag, I think if you want to do something different to the restrictions you definitely need to ring up your airline and make arrangements in advance, they may tell you that you can't take just one bag though.
If I were you I would just take 2 cases and play it safe.

Two things - some poor soul has to handle your luggage onto the plane - keep it under 25kgs.
Secondly, there is a saying about eggs and baskets - split your belongings between both cases so if one goes missing you both still have clothes.

Think you do have the combined allowance, but they won't lift anything over 32kg - best bet to take 1 big case and 1 small one - godness sake - your only going for a week!

No, you cannot pool your baggage allowance.
It is 20kg per item.
Many if not all UK airports also impose an absoloute maximum handling weight on suitcases for health and safety reasons of 32kg.
