Both.
I think "obligatory prayers" like grace tend to be shorter and fairly repetitious. I'm not proud of that, but I'm just being honest.
On the other hand, when I pray for specific needs, for myself and others, I talk plain English as I would to a friend, and tend to be very long winded sometimes.
Thirdly, when asked to pray publicly, such as in church, I tend to use Bible quotes and "King James" words, especially when I'm a little nervous about saying something dumb and embarrassing myself.
Sorry, that's not right, but I think it is all too common! King James words don't impress God, or move His hand, but it sounds good to fellow church familiies.
God forgive me for being aware of people.
I've heard folks pray as if preaching to the congregation. That's NOT prayer to God, although it might be prophesy.

I would think the Lord's Prayer was an asking quick prayer. The huge mistake in all prayer is not listening to the answer. If it's silent in your head that is where it's easiest to get an answer and start a conversation, as the answer will be something you hadn't thought of and might easily dismiss. Einstein sad that, if an ideas doesn't seem wrong at first, there's no hope for it. I've heard evangelists say that, if it makes sense it's not from God. That's why you have to ask for the meaning and then you have a dialogue with the universe going on, it's the rage now with Neale Walsch, Barbara Rose and a slew of others who are well known and individuals also. It says in Joel that in the last days that He would pour out his "spirit on all sorts of flesh." Things like that are catchy and "Conversations with God" is a fairly well known movie with a book trilogy by the same name, all of which were free on youtube. Everyone's experience with the spirit is different as we all use words differently and understand from our personal backgrounds so God speaks in our language individually from our perspective or in a way we will accept so your experience may be with different references and wording to your spirit so you can receive it. It's like some have cable, some word of mouth, some satellite, it's adjusted to your frequency and your receiver. Any differences are on your end, in other words. It's such a service to mention a book, don't let the title mis-lead you, "Think and Get Rich" by Dr pell. It reworks the old classic by the same name and has a lot of information that is so important, so I mention it, although most of the book is necessarily focused around wealth, it has so many spiritual truths, whether the author knows it fully or not. It's in the library in various languages, and speaks of reaching that source by how we think, to attempt to paraphrase it. That's to say it's a conversation or inquiry with me. Like asking questions on Yahoo. Oh, well, that's all I got. condensed(on the subject).

hey... REPEATED prayers are not broken, nor useless.
People "repeat" themselves with hypocritical munbo jumbo all the time, repeated prayer though is entirely "holy" shifting your mind gradually into a gentler state so you can address issues you're praying about from many angles and commune closer to God. Every religion has repeated prayers, hymns, psalms, chants, etc., so there is something to the process beyond "broken record" and records date you. C.D.s are the way of life for 20 years now, and computers and ipods for at least 5.
Humans are falliable, I do not speak to God as if my creating entitiy is falliable. Goodness, how....broken a concept is that? speak as if I was on par with the lord? to treat this Lord who forgave me as if I'm as good? how hypocritical is that?
Any way.. My prayers are between me and my maker and those who happen to hear should I be near them. What others do is up to them.

I pray as speaking to a friend but I do pray for friends and family every day. one friend says you should never pray the same things so find ways of changing the prayer I am not sure that matters God knows what is in our heart. I find repeating the lords prayer to be against Jesus' teaching. when I hear it in church I always concentrat on the true meaning of the words holy father and so on.

Hi!!!, well, when I was a kid I used to pray reciting the prayers very slowly so I could try to get a new and deeper way of understanding what I was trying to say to my God... then it became an automatic action, completly meaningless, and then I just stopped praying that way, I just talked to Him like if I were talking to my father. Now I pray like I were talking to myself, couse He already knows everything I have to say, it's me the one who needs to remind what I really want for my life, the one that has to work to fulfill my own destiny, and I don't forget to thank the Lord everyday for every single thing that exists. I don't know if it's a good or bad way of praying, but it's mine and I feel fine that way with Him and with myself. Bye!

Always have conversation with the Lord! I try to be reverent, and talk to Him from my heart! I know full well He can see all things and knows what I need before I ask, so there is no need to repeat things over and over. After putting something in His hands I do not have to worry. He provides and guides! Also, I try to give Him praise every day! He is worthy of all praise!

No, don't repeat. God doesn't like hearing the same thing over and over, because it implies a lack of trust in him. He doesn't need to hear it from you more than once. Unless, you are glorifying God, then I'm sure he doesn't mind the repeating too much. :)
Best to just keep it real with God, be yourself with him. He knows your heart anyway, and respects the honesty and personalization with him.

I speak to God(ess) like they were a very DEAR and loving friend because, that's what they are. Do you say the same things over and over to your friends? Of course not, you just hold a conversation with them, from the heart. And they speak back to me. No, I'm don't hear voices, but they DO have their OWN way of communicating what they want us to know and learn. ((((Rae)))))

I have a conversation with Him. I ask a LOT of questions, but when I get the answers I am hoping for, I know they are not valid, because He is trying to appease me, while at the same time getting me to realize that I am not the One in control here . . . this is HIS playground and HIS sandbox, and HE is allowing ME to play with HIS toys. I must always respect that.
Thank you, (((Rae))), for reminding me of this today. God bless.
[P.S. (((Raji))) . . . I DO hear voices. Hmmm. I am not so sure that is such a bad thing . . .
