I'd say that a correspondence course is a form of distance learning. My understanding is that in a correspondecne course, one receives a packet of material to read/study with instructions as to what homework/project one must turn in before moving on to the next part of the course.

Distance education courses today tend to be run via computer rather than via snail mail.

correspondence course has become an old word. in old days, they post by slow mail the notes etc.
with internet its distance learning to show the smallness of the world and notes r downloaded
