Many people tell me I shouldn't joke around with kids & treat them nice because they'll end up not respecting me. & then when I do discipline the kids, they say I need to lighten up.

Have you ever heard the crude saying: "Opinions are like a s s holes; everyone has one." It is true, everyone has an opinion on everything. Most people's opinions are on what OTHERS are doing wrong. Just ignore these people; it sounds as if you are doing fine with children. .

Don't listen to what anybody else tells you. Follow your own heart. Remember, a sense of humor will accomplish more for you than anything else, particularly as the kids grow older. Kids also love it when you make a mistake. Parents are imperfect and kids love it. Nobody is perfect so don't even go there. However, when you must discipline, you need to follow through with it. Really, it's nobody else's business as long as the kids aren't abused. If they must tell you what to do and you feel you must listen, let it go in one ear and out the other. Thank them for their suggestions and tell them it's very interesting. Then do whatever you want. Really, you didn't lie to them!

What you are doing wrong is bothering to listen to what these people have to say.

Joking around with kids and treating them nice is fine as long as when it is time to be an adult you are. My kids and I get along extremely well and we have a great relationship, but they know that I am mum first and a friend second.

Just tell these people to mind your own business.

Personally, I wouldn't care if people tell me to lighten up for disciplining my kids for an adequate reason. It sounds like you these people are over-stepping their bounds by commenting on things that aren't their business.

In 18 years of parenting, I found you can not win with these judges out there that observe your parenting skills because they lack a life of there own.
You are the parent and you know what is best. If you have concerns, then go to a parenting class. Otherwise you will be all over the place with what these people say.

Maybe you should keep it in the middle. Discipline them, but not to tough-like. Joke around, but not too much. Just let them know that you're cool, but you still are the boss.

I love you.
