Both, when I was younger spanking seemed to be the main punishment. Serious things got you a bare bottom spanking, not so serious ones were done through clothes. As a parent, we don't spank for non serious stuff, but chose to use timeouts, or taking privileges away. However for serious misdeeds, we use the old fashioned spanking on the bare bottom. I feel this way has the greater impact, on influencing weather or not they will do _______ again.

I agree that spanking on children's underwear is a good method of discipline, and that is how I deal with my girls if necessary. Baring the bottom adds an element of humiliation which I personally don't like (because I was spanked that way when I was a girl), but I understand that some parents prefer to spank on the bare because they can readily see the effect of their "efforts".

My mom spanked my 2 sisters on their bare butts when she walked into the bathroom and they had gotten into a water fight and had water dripping from the light fixtures, but it was not hard enough to leave a red mark. It was usually through our clothes. All 4 of us kids were spanked until around age 8, and then the groundings started, and none of us 4 kids ever had any ill effects of being spanked, and none of use ever became a drug addict, or spent even 1 night in jail. Nothing worse than a speeding ticket.

If my dad found out I had given my mom a hard time that day then he would spank me. He would wait until I was in bed asleep and yank the covers off. He used a board about 2 and half feet long, just over an inch wide, and about half inch thick. I usually slept on my stomach or he'd say to roll over. Then he would leave welts from my bottom over panties all the way down my thighs.
There were a few times with his belt if we were out shopping. Mom would take me in the restroom with dad's belt on bare bottom. Or dad with his belt bent over into the back seat of the car on bare bottom.

Both...if it was out of a burst of anger and usually in public, my mom would deliver a series of quick swats and get in as many as she could across the seat of my pants before I could cover up or run away. If I broke the rules at home, I would be told I was getting a spanking and be sent to my room to wait (the worst part of all!) After she let me think about it for a period of time, I would have to turn around, drop my pants (the humiliation!) and bend over the bed and she would use her hand.

My parents spanked me with my clothes on. As I got older and rebellious, I would get the belt. I don't lay a finger on my son or daughter. I give them time outs. I remember how humiliating that was and in the short time that I have them, I do not ever want them to feel what I did. I know that their mom uses corporal punishment on them, but hey, what can I do?

I grew up in the 70s and come from a larger family. Almost always we were spanked bare bottom.
