It could be an ulcer. I got one from the exact reason you mentioned. I got it the week that my dad died. I think it is from anxiety and stress. But it feels terrible. I went to the doc with mine as well. (15 years later). He chalked it up to stress and gave me a prescription for Prevacid. While I was taking it I had NO problems, but I stopped taking it when I got pregnant and never started taking it again. My daughter is 2 now. It still flairs up from time to time, but I just try to control my stress, take a couple of Tums or Rolaids and it goes away.

Maybe this is a sign of anxiety? That happened to my friend from school once. If you get really bad ear infections this can also be a sign of not getting enough protein or water each day. Maybe try to switch up your diet.

This can also be a cause of drinking too much carbonated Pop or soda. This can also cause your pain down in the heart area or feel like a needle poking you.

Also, one other thing. This maybe a sign of a reaction to smoking. If you experience this after a nice smoke, it can also be the caffine sensation.

People do feel sharp pains in their chest from time to time, it's quite normal. But it usually lasts in just a minute. 5 to 10 minutes is too long... maybe you should have an overall checkup or see a specialist.

This could be related to something called costochondritis, an inflammatory condition affecting the cartillage around the ribcage but I would recommend getting another opinion on your situation. Preferably from someone that does not share the same office of the doctor that you currently see.

Will you do me a favor?
When you feel that pain is arising, gently but firmly close the nostril through which you are breathing at that moment with your thumb on that side and keep it closed till you feel pain may arise.
(which nostril is breathing, this you can easily find by feeling your breath on the back of your hand.)
Do this and if it works, don't get surprised but thank God who does it for you.

difficult to say.... you have to be specific on which side or bony type of pain or on pressing some part or associated with breathing or coughing or heavy work....
