If the man is of larger than average size, then the woman should start out on top. That way she has more control over the depth and speed of the penetration. The sex will be more comfortable for her. Also, her breasts are directly in the front of the man, which offers many entertainment options. If the couple has had sex several times before and the woman is well adjusted to her partner's manhood, then there is no reason the man can't be on top.

Start out with man on top then switch it up. It also depends on where you are because if space is an issue then girl on top is easier so she can sit on his lap. With man on top both normally have to lie down or crouch.
