I was walking along the Champs in Paris a little over a year ago, and this big dog came pouncing up towards me- as large, if not larger than a German shepherd, but fluffy and white, kind of like a poodle or a bichon. It was very friendly. Unforunately, I did not ask the owner what kind of dog this was. Does anybody have an idea? I don't think it was a standard poodle, as I have checked on google, and the dog I saw was much bigger than the measurements for a full size.

Portuguese Water Dog. Check out the website. They DO come in white. They look very much like the standard poodle or a giant Bichon Frise. Poodles were developed from the PWD. Cool dog.

I would guess a Kuvasz

but your description isn't that specific..

Here's a Bedlington Terrier which reminds me more of a poodle

A Briard which is absolutely amazing to see.. (with full show coat)

A great pyraneese would be pretty big..

I think I'll rule out the Komondor..

I have only seen the portuguese water dog in a darker color, but..it says they can be white.

Spinone Italiano

That's all the ones I see offhand.. but, there are some that have that color even if they aren't recognized by the AKC.. such as White Schnauzers, or White Wirehaired Pointed Griffons.. Some Like the Irish Wolfhound or Afghan Hound which can be found in white I ruled out because they have other characteristics that might have been brought up.. wolfhound is very tall.. afghan hound is very distinctive.. But it could have been a mix.. or a breed that is kind of rare in the US.. (so, one I wouldn't know offhand)

Possibly a Kuvasz or a White German Shepherd.

Hm...big white breeds that I can think of are:
Great Pyrenees
Samoyed
Kuvasz

Keep in mind, the dog you are thinking of, may not even be a purebred. Could be a poodle mix, or could be an unknown mixture!

Standard Poodles are much larger than the ones you usually see. They can be as big as some Great Danes.

Samoyed, or possibly a Samoyed mixed with either a Great Pyrenees or a Chow Chow

Great Pyrenese or Samoyed maybe? Pyrenese are usually the size of a St. Bernard; Samoyeds are smaller but they are both snow white, large, and have beautiful brown eyes :-)

Go to www.akc.org and click on breeds. That will show you all AKC recognized breeds. See if any look like the one you saw. It also gives approximate sizes and weights of the different breeds.

Look in the AKC Book of Dogs, perhaps it was a mix of several breeds.
