It is pointed down or in towards the car while the vehicle is simply driving. This is to prevent the reflection from distracting/blinding other drivers. When the vehicle is in pursuit, they will use the spotlight to illuminate an area or suspect, in addition or in place of the headlights.

In the direction the cop wants to look. There is no law or requirement for the light to be positioned in any direction. If it was on and caused you to get in an accident, you can sue the police, but it may be very difficult for you to prove.

What is this question asking? A spotlight is a spotlight. Light comes out one side in a directed beam.

to hensleyclaw: the takedown is the light on top of our patrol car (typically its a part of our lightbar) that points straight ahead and does not move. the name comes from where its pointing, on a traffic stop, it helps the officer to see better when taking down a suspect.

the lights on the side of our lightbars are called alley lights, cause you can drive down a main road and shine them and see down alleys.

they spot light when off, is usually pointed back towrd the windshield or side view mirror. it is shaped like a hemisphere so it creates less drag and wind noise than if it was pointed forward

they call them take down lights and they are mounted on the side....in the old days the lights were facing forward and they could be turned by a handle to face the side. that takes time....so several years ago they added the side lights....it is easy now for them to light up the side of the road without turning their car into your yard.

that depends on what the situation is..Is it a new stiff light or a older wore out loose light. Is it the driver's side or passenger side? what time of day? are you just driving around or on a traffic stop? do you have a partner or by yourself?
