What will it cost in dollars, or what will it cost in suffering?

Consider this: Almost all, and I mean 99.99%, of puppies in pet shops are from puppymills and backyard breeders. These animals are bred until dead. They are puppy manufacturing machines, and have no life as a pet. They are kept as cheaply as possible to keep profits high. Some puppymillers have even been known to chop up the dogs and puppies that die in whelping (puppy-birth) and feed them to the surviving dogs! They are kept in stacked cages to make it possible to keep more producing puppies in less space. The uring and feces from the dogs on top drops on the dogs below. The vet care is shoddy at best, if it even exists. Do you know what they do to keep noise from barking dogs down? They shove a pvc pipe down the dog's throat and pound it with a hammer until they sever the vocal cords.

Do you want to be a reason they continue to abuse dogs for a buck? Do you think you can sleep at night knowing some of the money you paid for a petshop dog will be used to buy another dog to have it bred until it's dead? Go to www.nopuppymills.com Please look at this horror, and pledge not to buy fromn a petshop. Adoption is the best option.

Do you think any amount of money is as important as stopping this horror?

Much more than what it's worth for what you get. It can't possibly be started off well if it been in a pet shop. Find a very good breeder that is active in showing his/her dogs in AKC shows and ask for a show cull or go to a shelter.

Shelter dogs are likely to have been screened by a professional behaviorist (unlike most rescues) and are subsidized by your tax money so they'll come health checked, altered, microchipped and flea free and they price will be much less than it would cost you to have the same things done to any other dog you might buy elsewhere. Good deal if you're on a budget.

Call your shelter and ask what day they do their neutering of newly adoptable dogs or when the new adopties get put out for the public. Go then. Small dogs get adopted first.

Forget the puppy mills... I've witnessed a man bringing in an unwanted litter. He must have lived in the neighborhood. They were REALLY young puppies and selling them to a pet store. They could barely walk! That's the way it's done here. You just got them. It's illegal. Creepy.

Unfortunately, it's not uncommon.

Stepping off my soapbox now...

Seriously, $300 on the REALLY low end, $600- $700 average. Not kidding.

Hope your find a really nice puppy.

I've seen cute mixed breed dogs (ie "designer" dogs) sold in pet shops for around $600. On the internet I've seen them sold for even more (try $1000 for some mixes that make a cute name like Schnoodle). But often they come from puppy farms and have not been lovingly reared.

I had a look at the link and it looks like it is part of a dog rescue so it is not like they bred the dog deliberately.

The $350 also covers the second vaccination and the neutering. If you bought a puppy normally, even from a good breeder, you would have to cover these costs yourself. So really the puppy hardly costs anything!

The Petstore here sells mutts to idiots for $500 with no vetting. A pup from a rescue is usually around $350 since most rescues including the ones I'm involved in, get little or no discounts from vets. Shots run $20, KC $15, worming with fecal test $50 ,neutering $200-$400, microchips $40 plus the $45 vet visit fee each time the pup goes. Any leftover $ is used up on dogs needing alot of vet work with little hope of a good adoption fee. We routinely spend $500 on vetting a senior dog and ask $100 fee so are mostly "in the hole". Plus rescues have to buy heartworm and flea stuff not cheap.. Shelters here get cut rates so often charge $55-$75 for a fully vetted, neutered, chipped dog. But that doesn't cover their costs either. They get $$ from the county for caring for strays etc...

Forget the pet shop. DO not ever EVER buy a dog from a pet shop otherwise you ARE supporting puppy mills whether you believe it or not. Or care or not.

If you are put off by the too high adoption fee, there are many, many other animals who need homes. Go to your local shelter, humane society, amd/or SPCA. Look up local rescues. Many are breed specific and others take all breeds.

More than it's worth.

Get one from the humane society, most have lists for people looking for a specific breed or cross. One from the humane society will probably be healthier, better socialized, and better cared for medically than a pet shop dog. Puppies in pet shops have had zero or nearly zero human contact, no training or socialization whatsoever, the cheapest possible vaccines as opposed to the best performing vaccines, and usually have parasites when you get them.

You would probably pay the same price in a pet store or higher. For sure not less.

Just remember that $350.00 also includes this dogs deworm, all shots, and neuter. If you bought a pet store dog, you would pay $350.00 for just the dog, no vet work.

Even at $350.00, it's a fair price to pay for a fully vetted puppy.

What?
Why do you care? Do you know what rescue is about?
Are you aware of the business practices of pet shops?
Here's a hint: do a search for "puppy mills" and see what you get back. That's where those pet shop dogs come from.

Since this dog is a mixed breed, you won't find him in most pet shops. Most pet shops deal in purebred, puppy mill dogs, and sell them for outrageous prices -- usually hundreds of dollars more than a private breeder.

Mixed breed pups like this cute little guy are easy to find, as you did, on petfinder.com, or at your local animal shelter.

He's adorable!

Way over priced for a mutt. Not even a real breed. Cute, though. Go to the shelter & save a life instead of lining the pockets of these backyard "designer" breeders.
