The reason is that it is the only country that we've had war with without us having to leave troops. For example: We still have troops in Japan, Korea, Germany, Bosnia, Nicaragua, etc. Further, Vietnam never gave us any bunk after the war. In fact it is one of the best places to vacation in Asia and they want our presence there.

Other than the fact that Vietnam was not a war, you are almost factually correct! The Vietnam conflict was never declared a war, but an armed conflict.

Don,
I know I'm not going to get 'best answer' for this, but ....WTF are you smoking? Do you realize that the United States evacuated Vietnam as fast as they could when they finally did? And that it was completely occupied by the enemy - North Vietnam? And that it was a unified but completely communist country afterwards? Did you realize that after we left, they killed tens of thousands of people thought to have 'collaborated w/ the enemy' ? ( we could have won it easily if we'd actually wanted to at all cost to civilians there, and the risk of going head to head with communist China)
Do you seriously believe we actually need to leave troops in Japan or Germany at this point in time? We don't leave them there because of Japan and Germany - we leave them there because of the countries NEARBY. The ones that lose the worst always end up the best allies. You'll probably be wearing an Afghanistani shirt in 20 years.
Japan had 2 of their biggest cities turned into a puddle of glass for crying out loud, and had no idea how many more would get it. The only reason they didn't surrender after the first city was because Emperor Hirohito was a megolomaniac.
Do you call what happened in Nicaragua a war?
Did you forget that this country was founded on a war that we won against Great Britain? What about the Mexican-American war in which we won the majority of the southwestern States? The Allies won WWII, and we also won WWI, at least, that's what it's called when the ENEMY SURRENDERS!!

Was this a serious question? I mean - were you just trying to get somebody riled up? or do you truly believe the statement above? If you do - I'd suggest you do some serious reading.

Good god is everyone so baffled by the media bs that they dont have the will to enlighten themselves. Better empower yourself quickly before the government takes away our internet and replaces with the internet 2 which will be like your tv and have no way to access the information we can now.The war on terror is nothing more than a world conquest adventure, put in place by the elite international bankers of the federal reserve watch what these maggots do to your economy. You, sir, are a very wise person.

EDIT- I can see by the responses that most of these answerers have missed your point entirely. And I really don't see how, as you have stated it very simply and eloquently. Let's see if I can help.
1) When we got out, we got out. No bases, to residual forces. Complete, swift withdrawal.
2) There was no Anti-American sentiment afterward. Quite the opposite actually, as most Vietnamese people love America.

Sometimes the only way to really win a fight is to know when to walk away. Before the damage is irreparable.

My boyfriend says the same thing, that technically, we did not lose the war. However, I would not say that we won it, either, as I have different definitions of what winning is. BTW, the OTHER HALF IS WHITE!!!

Well we didn't really win in Vietnam our withdrawal was more of the US cutting its losses and hading the situation to be dealt with by the Vietnamese.
