There was a recent news item from Phoenix, AZ involving a man and his 19 year old daughter trying to exorcise the woman's three year old daughter. According CNN, there is an apparent uprising in the number of exorcisms occuring today. Do religions really support this and what is the biblical reference?

The AndersonCooper360 program said that is was the Grandfather and mother of the child. When police arrived, the adults exhibited bizarre behavior, woman was covered in blood. They both resisted police intervention, calling them "demons", and the grandfather was tazed. He later died.

Most Christians don't believe in the expelling of evil powers [demons]. In the original Greek the Bible does not call them exorcisms nor is there any reference to being possessed.
Bible references: John 8:44; Luke 11:24; Acts 19:13-16; 16:16. Jesus also gave authority to the twelve disciples and others to do the same [Luke 9:1;10:1,17].
Don't believe the dispensationalists when they say that
demon activity stopped with the end of the Apostles or the finalisation of the Scriptural canon (councils of Hippo in 393CE and Carthage in 397 CE). They are still very active today and it's set to get worse..

It's real, but because I'm not Christian myself, I can't give you the Biblical reference.

As a non-Christian, though, I find the incident appalling in the extreme and am frankly sickened by the twisted use to which religion was put in this case.

I thought it was the grandparents, and they'd tied the mother up. But to answer the question, no I don't believe in demon possession, which would make exorcisms just as ridiculous.

In that case I think they are a bit off the track
demons are real, and it takes a man of God that has the gift of God to cast them out
some of these things are just mental
