For anyone who has been on this site for any amount of time, know that I am a proud pagan, and have respect and tolerance , or at least try to for all spiritual beliefs and religions.
My brother, on the other hand, has chosen to follow the Mormon path. He mentioned today the term of excommunication and the process there of in the mormon church. He told me that this was a way of proving yourself worth....that you are worthy of being in the church and that you are worthy of "god"
Any thoughts?
As usual, no bashing please and only respectful answers. I am asking out of care and concern of my brother, not to mention out of true curiosity.
Blessings To All

Deslock...thank you for the info. However, I cannot make my brothers decisions or beliefs for him. Just because his views differ from mine, does not make his feelings towards this any less valid.
I do encourage him to follow his heart and to know that he is worthy of love, from others and himself, and that he needs not to "prove" himself to be worthy. Regardless, it is by grace that we all walk today and have the rights we have to choose our spiritual paths...perhaps this is something he needs to learn for himself. Blessings and Thanx

As a long-time Mormon, I can't make much sense out of your post. Excommunication is not how one proves worthiness, but removing a member from the church rolls.
In over forty years of service in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, I've know a handful of people who have lost their church membership. This is the most serious action that can be taken against a member, and in every case I know of has resulted from serious (and usually repeated) sin, such as adultry or conviction of a serious felony.
In most cases, the bishop (the leader of a local congregation) will counsel with the member, and encourage repentance and change. Usually, it's not necessary to excommunicate the member. If such a procedure is necessry, it's strictly confidential, so the privacy and dignity of the member is preserved. Therefore, only those actually involved would be there. Of the church leaders present, at least half would be assigned to take the member's side, and argue their cause.
If a member loses his or her church membership, they are encouraged to continue to attend church, to pray and read the scriptures. Church leaders work with them whenever possible to help them regain their membership.
Of the handfull of people I know who have lost their membership in the church, I have attended the rebaptism of all but one -- and I haven't given up hope on that one soul yet.

Trinity:
Ex-communication is an official church disciplinary action. It may occur when a member has committed very serious sins such as adultery, child abuse, and other such things.
Ex-communication may only occur after a disciplinary council convenes. Several church leaders will meet with the member to discuss the issue, the person's attitude, desire to repent, etc. There are other disciplinary actions that the church can take, but ex-communication is very serious.
It is also part of the repentance process for those involved in serioius sin. It may help the sinner understand the gravity of the sin. Often times, people feel such a loss of spirituality that it helps motivate them to truly repent and return to the gospel.
As one day we will all be held accountable for our lives, it is good that we have the opportunity to repent and take care of such issues in this life. Repentance, although sometimes talked about in negative terms, is a great blessing for us all.
I hope that this helps. Send me an e-mail if you have further questions or would like further clarification.

Excommunication is the removing the records of a person from the church from either
1. He or she asked their names to taken out of the record of the church.
2. Someone has committed sexual sins like adultery.
3. Someone has been publishing items against the church teachings such as Abortion etc.
4. Someone has been teaching false doctrine contrary to the teachings of the church like wanting to worship the Mother in Heaven. (Yes Mormons believe in a Mother in Heaven but do not worship her)
5. Someone has been teaching against the church itself.
Your brother I would think is high up in the local church to see a excommunication trial. Stake Council or Stake Presidency
unless he is on trial.

Excommunication, it is as the Rev. said being banished from the church. There is a process that one must go through, I'm not sure on exactly how they do it, but it is done before the High Council, a group of leaders. It's kind of like a trial that you would see in a Courtroom but probably not as dramatic as Law and Order.
To the others who said that the LDS religion is false. You lack Faith and are ignorant as to the things of God. The words speak as one speaking from the dust, but you ignore it. what a pitty.
Thanks for your sincere question, it's better than most people who ask about Mormons.

Are you certain he used the term 'excommunication' (which means a complete booting out of the church) instead of 'exaltation'? The latter implies a progression to a 'higher being' that has attributes similar to god. "Worthiness" is the the method of achieving this progression by keeping certain covenants, attending meetings and temple work, progressing thru the priesthood and accepting callings all the while being truly committed to the church doctrine.
It's a lot of work, and one must shelve a considerable amount of reality to accomplish this.

I have learned much from you my friend, and religious tolerance and acceptance starts with those closest to you. I suppose if he has examined his heart and mind and is making a decision based on what he himself believes to be sound information, he should and will do what he will. This is presuming he is an adult and is not being pressured or anything.
You know me. I know you. I suspect it wouldn't be your choice...you know it wouldn't be mine! But if it is his, it is his. And if it turns out to be a bad or unwise choice and he changes his mind down the road, then perhaps he will come away having learned important life lessons that will help him along the way on his spiritual path.
I say offer your love and support. It's his life, to sink or swim on his own.
Brightest Blessings and love always,

The Church of LDS is a cult. The book of Mormon has been proven false. The book of Mormon is fictitious, it is not based on any actual history. Its stories are from the imagination of Joseph Smith. He was a false prophet and a deceiver. Jesus said you would know a false prophet by their works. That they would add to or subtract from scripture. That's exactly what the church of LDS has done through Joseph Smith. The Bible is based on History. The books of the Bible speak of battles and places, towns and cities, temples and peoples. Those places where excavated by archaeologists artifacts were found at battle sites spoken of in the Bible.
In the book of Mormon, the American Indians are supposed to be descended from the Israelites. DNA testing has proven this false beyond a doubt. The Indians came from Asia, not Israel. Not one of the civilizations described in the book of Mormon have any artifacts, ruins, or man made objects of any kind. Not one!!! Of the massive battles written about in the book of Mormon not any of the supposed battle sites has any artifacts. Not one!!! Anthropologists say that this is not possible if the battles truly happened. There should be arrowheads, broken swords, axes, and spears, however there is none!!! Even Pagans can trace their roots back through factual History. The LDS cannot. They are an evil cult of the devil. Plead with your brother to leave this cult. Show him the truth. The Bible has truth. The book of Mormon is false 100%.
