I've downloaded the requisite utility from the HP web site, ran it, but no matter what I do, I can't get my Win98 computer to talk to the Deskjet 6840 printer over the network. At best any program trying to utilize the printer hangs. The printer is 100% OK and I used it with Win2k and WinXp boxes with no problem. I did use the "fix" utility I found on the HP site, but the problem is still there. I can ping the printer from the Win98 box and I can access its control screen via the browser.

It is clear that the Windows 98 can not handle the protocols from the new printer. Go to control panel then services management and then services. See what all process are started and verify that TELNET is started.

Then go to your printer on the control panel and set it up to send print jobs when complete. Turn spooling off.

Unless HP has drivers for the New Printer for the old operating system you may beout of luck.
I have made some older printers work by trial and error downloading different Printer group drivers. Delete those that don't work.
