My german shepherd is 4 yrs old and is knuckling and has a drunk gait.?

Blood panels have been run, xrays and most illnesses have been ruled out. He is getting worse everyday and is scheduled to have a MRI on Monday. He is also scratching a phantom itch with his hind leg regularly. He is seeing a neurologist but they do not have any answers either. Does anyone have any ideas?

What spot is he scratching constantly? Is it by chance his ear? If so, he could have a ruptured ear drum, but I would think your vet would see that during the checkup. My only other guess would be a neurological issue, which should show up on the MRI. Best of luck!

I had a female doberman who developed Wobblers -it is MS in dogs. She seemed drunk when she walked sometimes, difficulty getting up, walking, fell alot, lost her balance easily.

I hope the MRI tells you what it is, and I hope it is something they can fix. Good luck.

shepherds are prone to developing myelopathy which is nerve degeneration. while nothing can be done to correct it, there are treatments that can help slow down the progression of it. keep the appt for the mri, that will hopefully give you the answer...myelopathy, disc issue, pinched nerve...

Large breed dogs have a problem with a disease known as Hip Displacment. it is like I said very prvelent in larger breeds. Unless there is something much more seriously wrong.
