If you have the time take it apart and throw a little part of it into a different downtown trash can every day. Make sure each part is inside a dark plastic bag with rotting garbage so no one is tempted to open it if they are looking in that trash can. Start with the barrel which is the most incriminating.

I had the gunsmith fuse the triggers on the double barrel shotgun I inherited. When grandpa fired it, the barrels would fall off. I figured it was the safest way. Still have it and it is "safe" to hang on the wall. It is impossible to open, load shells and it will never fire again.
If I had to get rid of some thing, I would make sure it was safe. In case a kid found it.
If the gun is "clean" give it to the sheriff.

First you want to know which countries that have non-extraditon policys then you want to know how to get rid of a gun? What did you do? And you asked both of these questions in the same hour. If you did do something obviously your not very careful about covering your tracks so why don't you just turn yourself in?

Contact your local police precinct and ask how to go about properly getting rid of a gun in the home before you do anything. They may provide you with information about the rules governing the transporting and disposing of a gun specific to your state, county and city laws.

Why do you want to get rid of a gun? What's the point? Sell it or give it to a family member. I would never just get "rid" of a gun. (I mean it wasn't used in a crime was it?)

in all seriousness if its clean and you were allowed to have it in the first place, the police whereever you are usually have a provision for taking and disposing unwanted weapons. Also gunshops might be interested in buying.
Secondly if you don;t want anyone to know you dissassemble it into as many bits as you can. The barrel, chambre and anything with a serial number on it you should throw in the ocean or a big lake, in separate areas. The stock if its wooden can be sawed up (or burnt) and with all the other bits spread out over a long drive in the country.
