It was definitely chosen by men who wanted to take power away from women. The some ones who made the Goddess into a "Whore"(they actually refereed to her as the great whore), women into Jezebels, Mary Magdalene a prostitute(they also made sure to remove her book from the bible). Women are not allowed to preach and it was believed that the only women who made it into heaven were nuns. Eve was the worlds downfall and any educated or strong woman was a Succubus or Witch and was put to death. Women were not entitled to an education, it was a sin for them to know how to read and they were considered Chattel.
There is a story about when they first converted the Celts to Christianity they came over from Rome and were appalled to see that they had not only women priests but had even made one into a Bishop.
My mom told me about how not that long ago, after a woman gave birth she was to go to the Church. She had to follow after the priest while he walked away towards the alter and she had to try to grab at the hem of his robe. Finally when he reached the alter whe could grab the hem of his robe and this meant that she was forgiven. Having a child was a sin because of the sex. But ONLY for the Woman. I believe they feared women because of the years of Goddess religions and that women being able to bear children were in a power position. Anyone who says that this is just a coincidence is telling themselves a lie.
Edit: Blessings and love to you.

As a Christian, I do not believe that God has a gender. I would suggest that perhaps for lack of a better explanation that the term "he" as it is written and used is probably more for the sake of mankind than for God "himself". It makes this spiritual entity more "human" and understandable to us. It would seem odd indeed to refer to God as "it", although the term may be more accurate from a physical standpoint. Using "he" is also more supportive of the male role in the society during which most of the Bible was written. Although not a student of other religious beliefs, I suspect that Buddah (spelling) etc. are also considered males....and probably for the same reasons.

Funny you should ask such a thing. lol

You already know my thoughts on this one I am thinking. I believe that men chose it....especially considering the fact that during the ancient times, people went to great lengths to take away the rights and validity of women in the church.

But please keep in mind...this is just my humble pagan thoughts. I could be wrong.

God is God God is transcendent. that means that every attempt to describe God is confined to the limited vocabulary and culture of the human defining God. For thousands of years God was described as female. HOW SEXIST I'm glad the men fought back and took over. I mean really Do you really think that a creator beyond time and space beyond opposites that is everything has GENITALS I don't think so.

Humans chose the gender of my God. Most refuse to accept that my God is both. "He" is used to try to be grammatically correct.
