*Well think of a decoration theme for your room and start from there ..example if your favorite color is, let's say, purple then get stuff in the color purple like your sheets and/or your rug...
*also clorox wipes and febreze are everything ur gonna need to keep ur room fresh and clean
*dont forget to get a warm comforter because schools suck when it comes to heating
*a laundry basket and a waste basket
* dont worry youll be okay and just remember one thing on your first day....GET THERE EARLY!!! this way you can get the best bed and table and there wont be so many students (most students start coming at like 2 pm)

It depends on how far your school is from home, too. If you live closeby, just pack your fall clothing. When winter comes you can swap out your fall wear for winter stuff. There isn't alot of space in dorm rooms. Like others have said - computer, microwave, iPod/stereo/boombox, bedding, laundry bag/basket, reminders of home. Also, a plastic tote for carrying your bathroom toiletries and anything to help you stay organized. It would probably be a wise investment to go to Target/WalMart and purchase a small hutch for your desk, because you will need the extra shelf space. Good luck!

At first, take enough clothes for a month (you can do laundry!) - after that, you'll probably be ready for a weekend at home to pick up more clothes and smalls things.
Aside from your regular tshirts, shorts, and jeans:
- comfy walking shoes
- a good backpack
- FLIP FLOPS - SOOOO important for the showers!
- a flashlight, extra batteries
- your computer and accessories
- posters and tape to hang them
- two sets of sheets and towels
- a shower caddy
- toletries
- books, photos, stuffies from home
- school supplies (much more expensive at the campus bookstore!)
- some small snacks
- a fridge if you're allowed (coordinate with your roommate on this)
- a small lamp for your bed
- a desk lamp
- cell phone, cord, calling card, etc.
- a good alarm clock
- camera
- journal
- your housing information, schedule, etc.
Some 'extra' things I took over the years:
- a comfy desk chair
- a big rug to cover our cold tiled floors
- closet organizer
- shelves for over the fridge (one made to go over a toilet works really well!)
- a hutch for over your desk
- laundry basket (cloth ones bend and take up less space); quarters for the machine and detergent, stain stick, etc.
My suggestion is to take a little as possible until you realize how much room you have. Start with the basics.
My last suggestion is that if you like animals, once you get in, get a fish. Doesn't have to be a big deal, you can find a glass bowl at a crafts store, and some pretty pebbles or shells. You can pick up a betta fish at the pet store with food, water conditioner, and a plant to hide in. They're really easy to take care of and you'd be surprised how much they interact with you (but if yours doesn't eat for a week, get another one to sit beside him in another bowl! worked for mine).
Good luck and have a wonderful time!

Something that reminds you of home. You are starting over esentially, but a momento from your room will help.
The basics-clothes, shoes and laundry equipment.
Tech-laptop, printer, and then the phone and camera and ipod.
