Its a province or region... if you had posed the question in NZ you might have got a correct answer sooner!!!!!!! Australia is a whole different Country.

EDIT: It is not a STATE... it is NOTHING LIKE A STATE. New Zealand does not have STATES! The North Island and the South Island are just that. Different islands in the same country. State have a federal government. New Zealand has a central government. The words region and province are used to denote the same geographical entity in NZ for example, we have regional councils (which are nothing like state governments) we also have provincial sporting competitions. Originally NZ was comprised of provinces.

Two states in NZ only (same law applys everywhere in NZ)
The North Island and the South Island.

Taranaki is a REGION in the west of New Zealand's North Island
