I would suggest that you purchase the cable box. This will give you more access to HD channels.

It should work. Does the cable work with other TVs? Maybe you need to select the correct input from your Samsung TV's remote? What does your Samsung manual say?
If you don't have the manual, maybe you can look it up on the Samsung web site. Also, ask the cable company for advice.
Sorry I can't give you a perfect answer, but I think if you can answer the above questions and also check your manual and ask for advice from the cable company, you should find a solution quickly. (I'm assuming your TV is not defective.)
By the way, without a cable box you probably can't receive an HD image on your TV, but other channels should be fine on your TV. A cable technician can probably figure out the problem you're having in a few minutes.

No, you don't need a cable box to get some stations....
The newer TVs have a CABLE and an AIR /UHF connector for the antenna wire...
You may be connected to the Air/Uhf connection.
Check it, and use any station between 2 to channel 13 FIRST...
ALL Cable companies use Most of these stations and you can check for signal, and the proper connection to the proper antenna input by STARTING with channel 2 to 13.
THEN go ABOVE Channel 13.....try 22 or 42 or 36...
IF you don't get those stations, then it's time to get into your menu, go to "channels" or "setup" icon - select "Autoprogram" to lock in your Cable stations...once done, you will have your Cable stations from 2 to 125....
Any numbers above 125 require the Cable box.....

Your HDTV may not have a tuner in it. Does it have an ATSC, NTSC, QAM or 8vsb tuner in it. If not then you will need a set top box. ATSC tuner is for over the air digital (antenna). NTSC is for analog over the air and cable. QAM and 8vsb are both digital cable tuners (I think they are the same thing with a different name, but I could be wrong).

You need to do Channel Scan first.
Go to the system menu (or something similar), specify that you have a cable input (not ANT) and do a channel scan.

Between the box and the TV, yes, since the box is limited to an analog 480i composite signal, with mono audio. HDMI (if your box has an HDMI connector), can support 1080i and stereo audio, at least.
