No, they only need to be removed for a few reasons:
-If there is no room in your mouth for them and they will shift your teeth significantly.
-They are growing in sideways (or in any abnormal way) and will bump into the teeth beside them (and basically destroy those teeth)
-They are not erupting (coming through your gums) for which ever reason and never will
-They area around it is infected. (or has a cyst, etc...)
-If they are too far back to clean well and you are getting a lot of cavities on them. (Though not all dentists will do this)

Extraction of the wisdom teeth is necessitated by the size of the individual's mouth (actually jaws.) Human jaws are becoming shorter and smaller with each generation. The last set of molars is often too much for the shortened jaws and have to be removed, lest they crowd the other teeth. Some even have impacted wisdom teeth, meaning they are so far back toward the bend of the jaws that they can't erupt through the gums, or even grow horizontally into the back teeth. Impacted wisdom teeth must be extracted surgically.

Perhaps a future generation will be born without them altogether.

A lot of people never get their wisdom teeth pulled. I did though and if you ever have any teeth removed your wisdom teeth are the worse!!! Mine had not started to bother me yet but we could see them in an x-ray and the were right in the middle where your jaw comes together. I have a very small mouth and I had crowded teeth. Anyways getting them out was like a minor surgery for me they had to put me to sleep. When i woke up i was really drugged and i had 4 deep holes in my mouth. Very painful! i was out of school for a couple of days. They say if everything doesn't go right during the operation that they could hit a nerve that could complety paralyze your face. It turn out fine after awhile though. You just have to eat really soft foods and keep the holes rinsed out.

I had to have my wisdom teeth removed because they started coming in and were not fitting. My jaw was swollen and I was miserable. When I went to the dentist, the only option was to get them out.

It's actually neither. It's not up to you. It depends on how your wisdom teeth come in. I actually had to have one cut out, because it was wouldn't breakthrough my gums. I also had my other 2 pulled, because they were both rubbing the inside of my mouth raw. Some people never have them pulled, because they don't cause any problems. If they are causing you problems, go to the dentist ASAP. I waited too long, and developed an abscess which is more painful than you can imagine!

You should only have them removed if they are causing you trouble, having wisdom teeth removed is quite a traumatic experience and its very likely you will get pain and infection after wards.

If your orthdontist or dentist recommends it, you should have them removed. Not everyone has to, but a lot of people need to have them removed.

In my case, I didn't have space for them in my mouth, and they bottom ones were coming in sideways, so they could have caused major damage to my other teeth, as well as pushing my other ones out.
