Well I am not an expert but here is what I do. I would get an idea of the colors in the rug. Then I go to Lowes or a paint store and find similar colored paint samples. Get several different colors that look like what may be in the rug. Get two samples of each color. I then take them home and place them on the rug and on the couch. I work with several samples until I get my favorite combinations. Lets say your rug has three colors in it. Then get samples of similar colors of all three. You may end up with 16 or so color samples. They don't have to match perfect. When you lay them out leave them for a day or so. Then when you have decided you can take the samples you have chosen with you when you buy your curtains and match as close as you can. It's also a lot of fun!

Choose a color from the rug to accent the room, and then use it in a few places around the room and as a part of the window treatment. You can pair the window treatment with perhaps a neutral blind and valances or curtains in your accent color. Also if you have time tune to the HGTV network for a few shows, this network has some really helpful design and decorating shows. Happy decorating!!

Well since your furniture is black then any color would do. I suggest picking a color in the multi-colored rug that you like and pick a curtain in that color. Or you could go with two colors that go with anything which is black or white. Even a beige color would go well.

A color wheel can help when making decorating decisions. The wheel is broken into warm and cool colors. Cool colors--blue, green and violet--are serene and best used in quiet places like bedrooms and offices. Warm colors--red, yellow and orange--are friendly and great used in family rooms, kitchens and dining rooms.
There are three types of color combinations:
Monochromatic--one color, different shades, from light to dark. When using a monochromatic scheme, add texture and pattern for interest.
Complementary--opposite colors on the wheel, like red/green and orange/blue. When using a complementary scheme, use less of the warm color and incorporate multiple patterns.
Neighboring--three colors adjacent on the wheel, like green/blue/violet. When using a neighboring scheme, one color dominates and accessories pick up the remaining two colors.

What color are your walls?
Safe curtains are white, but nice material so it doesn't have a plain, cheap look. Or go crazy and fun,and do purple! Blue is always a safe bet. Just don't do black curtains, it's morbid.

Choices [ in no particular order ]
1] black, same as furniture
2] same color as walls
3] pick your favorite color from the rug. Buy curtains and throw pillows in the same color. Add colored candles in iron stands - voila! instant coordination!

OK...it seems most of us agree - pick one of the lesser colors from the rug. just make sure it is a color you really like. don't buy beige if you hate beige. go with the next color.
then buy some candles in the same color, a couple of throw pillows and you are all set.
hope this helps.

If the rug isnt to big then just get a new one.
But if you MUST have this rug, choose a color that is stands out the most in the rug.
I recommend a warm colors to compliment the black couch.

You can use any color out of the rug. Just be sure to incorporate that color throughout with some throw pillows, candles, photo frames, etc.

I guess it depends mainly on your color scheme. Is your multi color rug one that you could use beige curtains with or maybe black and white.
