I own a 55-60 pound beagle/lab mix. He eats, and has always eaten, Science Diet Nature's Best dry food. We rotate back and forth between chicken and beef. I have heard some bad stories about food that you thought was good food. Has anyone heard any good or bad things about this brand?

For many people Science diet works. If you read the label of Science diet Natures Best-REAL BEEF, the 1st ingrediant is chicken meal. Humm..? Most of their foods also contain corn meal, which my dog is allergic too as well, its the most common allergen so I personally cannot feed this food. Other than that I havent heard anything terrible and there is certainly a LOT worse!

According to the best on-line pet information website I know of, Science Diet Nature's Best is just fine. It is one of the newer dog foods and is highly recommended. I don't know why so many others have disapproved of those who answered similarly, but please go to www.itchmo.com and see for yourself. My wife and I have been involved in canine rescue/adoption for several years and she also works at a no-kill canine shelter with 100+ dogs. Itchmo.com listed the recalled pet foods on Sunday night and the following Monday morning was when we first started seeing the dogs becoming sick. Since then, we've checked Itchmo.com regularly for any updates and safety warnings and they have proved to be extremely reliable.

I feed a mix of Wysong (Synorgon diet) and Nature's Variety (frozen raw diet). Dogs have wonderful coats and skin, small, compact stools and great overall health and vitality. Have fed just about everything else and what I've mentioned above is tops... I have a breed that is prone to lip fold pyoderma (infection of the lip folds) and I've noticed a difference in their ability to fight/prevent infections has turned for the better.

After all the recalls that have been around lately, I would never go back to feeding anything that is in the stores or anything that the vets sell.
I suggest you try feeding something like Solid Gold, Candiae, etc. These types of food are much much better and they do not contain any fillers, by-products, protiens, glutens. They are more expensive, but in the long run you actually save money. Because they are not loaded with fillers, your dog will eat less and it will last longer.

And for those who think Science Diet is so great.......some of their products were also RECALLED. I personally wouldn't trust any company that had anything recalled. Here's the link: http://www.thepetfoodlist.com/petfoods_pg1.htm
Look unders "Hills" for more information. This site also gives a list of all foods that were recalled (highlighted in Red), and the ones that were not. Just about every food is listed with it's manufacturer.
Also Nutro, Royal Canin, Chicken Soup.......ALL have had products recalled!

Hill's Science Diet wasn't involved in the recall.
Their prescription L/D (liver diet) has helped to keep our dog alive for several years now. He's almost 14 years old now.

I haven't heard anything. I don't think it is bad but i don't think it is on my great list either. Here are some of the good dog brands that i have tried and seem to work for me.

Wellness
Canidae
Flint River Ranch
Wysong
Solid Gold
Eagle Pack
Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover's Soul
Nutro
Royal Canin

I haven't tried your type of brand yet but if it is working for your dog, then i suggest you keep it.

Good luck!

It's an excellent premium food. Dog food companies, like any other business in the world, try to make themselves look like the best and they try to find fault with their top competitors. I've had dogs live into their late teens eating nothing but Science Diet.

Actually, Science Diet only had a couple of cat foods (m/d dry and 2 flavors of savory) recalled--not bad compared to many other well known companies.

All of Hill's Science Diet foods, are good foods.
One of the best.
If you are nervous about the brand of foods that were recalled, you don't have to be if you are still buying it at the stores.
Because all of the stores had to pull all the recalled foods.

But you have nothing to worry about with the food your dog is on, it's a good food :)
