I am thinking of buying some good speakers as a part of my home theater system. The home theater is in my living room of about 350-400 square feet. I listen to a lot of rock music - which is a priority for me and I don't want to compromise on the quality of my stereo sound. But I would also like superior sound effects from my blue-rays discs.

I also play a lot of music from my computer. Does the choice of speakers matter? Probably not . But I thought I should check with all you experts out there.

Any suggestions? Any specific brands?

At that price point you have a wide variety of very good options. Neither Bose nor JVC are any good. PLEASE disregard the first post. I sold Bose for many years along side some high-end brands. Bose is a low end product marketed and priced as though it were high end. You can learn more about this at this link http://www.intellexual.net/bose.html...
JVC products are also very cheaply made.

Speakers sound quite different from one another and every listener has his or her own taste in sound. Thus, I would advise you to take your time in making your purchase. You will have these speakers for many years and you want to be confident in your choice. There is no substitute for educating yourself by reading Audio / Video magazines and online forums. You should visit as many high-end stores as you can. If you do not live in a large city you should make a special trip to the nearest one to visit various high-end stores there. Bring your own DVDs and CDs. At the price point you specify I would encourage you to listen to M&K, B&W, Monitor Audio, MartinLogan, and Silverline Audio. There are many other good brands but these are all ones you should listen to before you buy. If you are looking for a good buy on a quality subwoofer check out HSU Research's website. These are great subs that have gotten very good reviews but which sell at low prices since they are only available factory direct from their website. Enjoy your shopping!

Hi there. The choice of speakers definitely does matter .How many speakers do you need .For your budget there are some excellent speaker systems. But is your Source and Amplification good enough to match the speakers. It is more important to have a good Source and Amplifier first to give the speakers a decent signal .The greatest loudspeakers in the world are only as good as what they receive from the amplifier. If they receive a bad signal they will reproduce that signal faithfully. I am not trying to suggest to you don't get expensive ones.I am only pointing out that they will not give their best performance if they have a damaged signal.because all components in the chain degrade the original signal to some degree. That's why you should have the best Source you can afford.(so that it does not alter the signal very much.)Next get the best Interconnect cable you can afford,to cary the signal to the preamp.A Receiver is limited by the use of a single power supply which must power the AM/FM Tuner, the Preamp section and amplification for 5 or more Power Amp sections. The result is a loss of sound quality. A separate Surround Sound Preamplifier and a 5 or more channel Power Amplifier will do a much better job of preserving the signal because each piece of equipment has its own power supply .And finally you need good quality speakers cables for the amplified signal to arrive at the speakers. So the sound you finally hear from your speakers will be the result of how well the other components have processed the original signal. If i had $4,000 to spend i would buy the best Source and Amplification that would not alter the signal very much. Then any speakers would reproduce a good signal .

Speakers all reproduce the signal they receive with their own "sound" added to the sound that they reproduce. This is called the speakers "coloration".The best speakers don't add too much coloration and we call these 'neutral" sounding speakers. These speakers usually have a fairly flat frequency response.
meaning they do not emphasise or de-emphasise any part of the frequency range so the bass midrange and treble are in equal amounts when you hear them .The other speakers all emphasise or de-emphasise one or more parts of their frequency range.(more bass, less bass, more midrange, less midrange more treble ,less treble etc.)

Check out our loudspeakers at theophanyloudspeakers.com I would be happy to do A/B comparisons beside any of the loudspeakers listed in the replies. We have started exporting to the USA, they will be available nationwide over the next year. We are already selling well in some of the southern states.
Virtually no harmonic or mechanical distortion. They also have some of the fastest transient response figures ever tested. We believe they are some of the most emotionally engaging speakers available. They are made in New Zealand with a wide range of native and imported timbers as well as paint finishes. You would love them. Of all of the demos we have done since Jan 06 we have sold to 95% of the clients who came for a demo.
They are available in Dubai, London, Belgium, Australia and now the USA.

wow! someone with a descent budget. Well i don't know what type of sound you like. I am a big fan of neutral sound which is preferred by audiophiles and has the least coloration of the music and the most accurate sound. Neutral speakers play every kind of music with great quality because they don't favor parts of the sound spectrum. i do own KEF loudspeakers from England which are neutral and they blow away just about any speaker ( i listen to rock with them too). I would NOT go with a satellite speaker package or Bose because you mentioned that you want to listen to rock music, the smaller speakers lack the mid range that rock music produces so t just doesn't sound good.

I don't want to TELL you what speakers to buy but i will recommend only speakers that i would buy myself. Sound is a personal preference you could think that a pair of Bose 801's sounds better than some B&W 803's (which they don't) but thats up to you.

Any of these speakers i listed below configured for a 5.1 ch home theater will do an awesome job with music and blu-ray discs.
