Adderall and my long term health?
I just started today with a 20 mg extended release....i felt great....no mild mood swings that i sometimes have (not severe), i was more focused, and felt good and confident and my head was clear........I am 20 yrs old and in good physyical health and very healthy and have never been on meds before and am just using this med to treat my slight problem w/ focus and attentiveness. If i just stick with my one tablet a day, will I become addicted? Ive never been addicted to anything before? Also, I don't want to tkae the drug if it has negative long term side effects or if I'll be crazy different once i discontinue...but i look online and i dont get much info....it basically only says people with heart problems before taken the drug can experience worse heart conditions....but what about someone like me who is in good physical shape? I don't want to compromise this.

The FDA has acknowledged the dangers of Adderall, a popular drug used for the treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity disorder, in a study released in February 2006. Adderall, made by Shire Pharmaceuticals, entered the market after its FDA approval in 1996. Recent findings following the death of 51 patients taking the medication suggest that Adderall may be associated with the onset of high blood pressure, heart attacks and other serious and potentially fatal side effects

What is ADHD?

ADHD affects approximately 2 million youth in the United States, many of which are regularly prescribed Adderall and other amphetamine and methylphenidate medications. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is particularly common among youth and typically is displayed through inability to concentrate, difficulty being still and quiet, and the difficulty controlling one's actions.

Adderall Risks

The dangers of Adderall first elicited public concern when Canada health officials removed the medication from the market in 2005. The medication was removed in response to 20 reports of sudden death, thought to be caused by Adderall. However, Adderall was returned to the market after six months because Canadian officials were unable to prove that Adderall posed a more significant risk than similar drugs.

Serious dangers of Adderall recognized by the FDA and health officials in addition to high blood pressure and heart attacks, include :

Sudden death
Abuse
Severe withdrawal symptoms
Worsening mental health
Stunted growth, substantial weight loss
Increases tics associated with Tourette's syndrome
Sudden death and heart attacks associated with Adderall have caused the most concern following the death of 51 Adderall patients. The FDA has commented that no casual link has been found yet associating Adderall and sudden death, however, doctors should take extra precautions to watch for symptoms of the dangers of Adderall.

Dangers of Adderall
Concern is mounting over the serious dangers of Adderall. In early 2006, the FDA announced that, for the past two years, they have been officially monitoring cases of cardiovascular injury and sudden death in patients taking the ADHD drug Adderall. According to officials, over 50 cases of sudden death have occurred in American adults and children taking Adderall or similar medications. While no definitive causal relationship has been proven between these deaths and ADHD drug use, this information clearly suggests that the dangers of Adderall may be more serious than once believed.

The known dangers of Adderall

Since the FDA first approved Adderall in the 1990s, reports of adverse events experienced by Adderall users suggest a number of increased dangers of Adderall use. The known dangers of Adderall include:

A high potential for Adderall abuse ~ The FDA requires that all Adderall labeling contain a black box warning about the serious dangers of Adderall abuse. Misuse of Adderall may cause sudden death and serious cardiovascular adverse events.
Psychosis ~ A worsening of pre-existing mental illnesses and certain medication conditions are serious potential dangers of Adderall use.
Drug interaction~ Combining Adderall with MAO Inhibitors and other medications can cause adverse reactions.

CARDIOVASCULAR SIDE EFFECTS The dangers of Adderall may increase the risk of heart attack, high blood pressure, and stroke in patients using this ADHD medication.
SUDDEN DEATH Several cases of sudden death have been reported in patients taking Adderall.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding the dangers of Adderall during pregnancy may increase the risk of a child being born prematurely or with a low birth weight. Adderall can pass through breast milk; therefore, nursing moms are urged not to take Adderall.
Existing heart problems The dangers of Adderall are greatly increased in patients with pre-existing heart defects, high blood pressure, blood vessel disease, and other cardiovascular conditions.

I was healthy and athletic. I took Ritalin for "slight problems" when I was in my 20's. I only took it for 6 mos. I lost so much weight. I had no appetite. At 45 yrs. old I had a MASSIVE HEART ATTACK. I am now disabled. I have often wondered if those pills caused problems that did not show up till later. I think we are a society of quick fixes. We take medicaine without really knowing the long-term affects. TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR, get a second opinion, AND talk to a GOOD PHARMACIST.

Steven, I work for the company that discovered this drug. It is safe. If your doctor told you to take 1 tablet a day then that's what you should do. You should always ad-hear to your prescription. I am glad that you are more focused. I hope that this give you a better quality of life. As far as the heart condition that you are concerned about it is talking about people who have a pre-existing condition, but like any drug ( you should read your package insert that is given to you when you get your prescription) if you at any time have any adverse effects from the drug you should immediately contact your doctor. Good luck.

There are a lot of negative effects that come with Adderall, but it depends on how much you are taking how long it takes to rid your body of it once you stop taking it.

My friend's bf was taking it and she said it took him like a month once he was off it to become normal again. He went into a deep "depressive" state and wouldn't leave his room for days.

I wouldn't stop taking it until you talk to your doctor.
