I noticed a few comments on here about how counselors should stop counseling people and everyone should turn to the Bible instead. I thought this was weird that someone shun seeking real help and instead turn somewhere that my or may not help them. Have you ever stopped a suicide by simply talking to someone? Does it not say that God helps those that help themselves?

I've also seen plenty of devout religious people turn to counseling as well as the church-- some people just need a human being to help them through hard parts of life as well as whatever God they believe in. And don't forget-- your Bible is one of thousands of different gods and goddesses that span the world.

Someone spoke out against Oprah. Oprah is a strange person, but she does so much good and gives to so many charities. What's the problem with someone not only trying to help her fellow human beings with their problems, but help save lives too?

Are you against psychiatrists helping people? Why?

Cir-- yeah the drugs thing bothers me. Like, 50 years ago all kids were fine, and nowadays half of them are on things for ADD...that does frighten me. Some of them do tend to just pass out drugs, but there are some that genuinely want to help people.

I am a Christian and believe that there are people who need mental help. They are sick and can't help themselves.

Bubbles, do not generalize. In the USA there are many people with very strange ideas ( you just mentioned some of them ). Do not put all of us in the same group.
I can tell you that the Bible is the word of God, yes, but usually you need somebody to talk to you about it. Otherwise you might develop very weird ideas about it.
It is recommended to attend a prayer group lead by a priest. This is usually the best way to follow the path of The Lord.
In my country there was a clinic for psychiatric illnesses managed by monks, the Brothers of San Juan de Dios.
I can also tell you that Karl Jung, a psychiatrist, said once that most of his patients' problems were to fail finding a religious perspective to life

I have seen cases where Psychiatrist actually did more harm than good for people. Psychiatry is based on the idea that everything is able to be resolved by changing ones outlook, or behavior. In fact that is not the case for most of the real problems are becaue of people being inherently selfish and as a result they want their way. Psychology caters to that by trying
to let them know that they1 are okay. They even go so far in the Freudian School as to blame others for YOUR troubles. That is the same rational that says that a woman that gets raped is to blame for being raped. The Bible has the answers for things we face.

I am a Christian I worked as a counselor. I later worked as a Christian counselor. I counseled women who were victims of domestic violence. The first counseling job was in a domestic violence shelter and we had to keep our faith out of it. The second counseling job was called Hurting women's counseling. We did use the Bible and scripture. I know that sometimes people do need medications as well as therapy.

Yes Oprah does do a lot of good but many young women look up to her and they think that it is fine to live with a man (Steadman) and not bother with the formalities of marriage and that is not a good example. This is the only thing I have against her.

There are a lot of non religious people who are also against counseling. Yes I have kept someone on the phone until help got there and I am a Christian. I visited my friend while she was on the mental health ward in the hospital. I see nothing wrong with receiving help.

I am not and I don't know anyone who is
My Dad has ran a home for the homeless for more than 25 years, they come from broken and abused family's and no families at all, some are mentally ill
I have deep respect for Mental Health Professionals without them this would be a sad place
Most have an opinion and not an experience
I think we should be careful what we say unless we know it for a fact and have walked in their shoes

Have I ever stopped a suicide? Many times.

And I've seen studies done by major universities such as the University of Chicago which showed that Psychiatry and Psychology does not really help.

My position is that Christians should turn to Biblical Counselors that is counselors who have been trained to help people using the Bible as their guide.

you are able to desire to a minimum of comprehend Atheism in the previous than you're making ignorant assertion like-'you human beings' and 'think God would not exists.' you're very lots at night precise right here. I wish those recommendations assist you. There are some friendly ones precise right here. Christians, in my experience are speedier to bypass judgement on than distinctive populations since they are taught that "Jesus is the tactic." There are genuinely many "distinctive" methods which promises that tale loss of credibility. in many situations Christians attempt to rework any and each individual they are waiting to to think the way you do. on the choice hand, we purely do no longer desire to get replaced, judged or *ucked with. The Catholic church doesn't forbid counseling or psychiatry. I can't imagine which Christian religion would or why. I think when anyone can help another in any way, it's a blessing.

I would hope any person would have brains enough to get professional help rather than "turn to the Bible". I've read it five times and there's nothing in there to help someone who needs counselling.
