The Third Regiment United States Infantry is the ceremonial unit of the United States Army. In addition to supplying the manpower and firepower of an infantry regiment to the Military District of Washington, the regiment serves as the home/support unit for the guardians of the Tomb of the Unknowns, it provides the caisson and honors details for funerals at Arlington, and similar ceremonial activities. It's also one of the best-trained units in the Army, made up exclusively of outstanding soldiers.

The Old Guard or the President's Hundred is the ceremonial leg of the Army. They conduct Army and Joint service ceremonies, memorial services and are also the soldiers you see guarding the tombs of the unknown soldiers in Arlington National Cemetery.

Bust just because the 3rd ID is a ceremmonial unit doesn't mean that it doesn't do combat. The 3rd ID is comprised of Infantrymen. Although, they rarely see combat, they are still combat ready.

The 3rd ID (Old Gurd), is a ceremonial unit.

The first responder to this question is absolutely correct. If you care to see a fictionalized movie about their current duties, there is none better (in my opinion) than "Gardens of Stone" with James Caan.
