Hi..I prefer the Westie. A few of my friends have them (males and females) and they are GREAT dogs. They are definitely a bit larger than the pom and have stronger bones. Depending on the age of your brother, a more solid dog might be best. Poms are also known to bark A LOT! In our Petsmart training class for our pup, a girl has a Pom. Very small (like 2 lbs), barks a lot and always wants to be held and next to mommy all the time. Research a little more about these breeds to see which one fits best into your family. Check out...

Good luck :)

I have no experience with a westie, but we've had a chocolate Pom for 5 1/2 years. We got him at 2lbs, 6 weeks old, and he has been amazing. Only time he'll bark is when someone strange knocks on the door or when we're leaving for work. He never tore anything up as a puppy (of value...he did a number on the toilet paper several times...) I never thought that I would like a small dog, but he won me over in just a few days, and now I can't imagine a better breed. I know that every dog owner thinks and believes that their dog is the smartest, but I really believe that Poms are up there in the top three or four breeds. I mean, our pom knows just about as much english as we do, and now he's learned the spelling of most of our whispers (such as r e a d y to g o and t r e a t.)

Both breeds are small breed dogs and should be fairly easy to take care of. Both have long fur so brushing and grooming frequent brushing and grooming is required. Both should do fine indoors but the Westie will require more exercise compared to the Pansy. Basically their needs are very similar in terms of caring for them.

Now, about their behaviour. The Westie belongs to the terrier breed and being Terriers they make excellent pets but sometimes can be unpredictable. Even with their small size, they are not afraid to show their character, happy or sad. Don't expect them to hug them and carry them around because they dont really like it. They will bark and show their aggression at strangers. They do require exercise and them out for walks daily would be best.

Pomeranians are smaller in size as compared to the Westie and similarly they are also not afraid to bark at strangers when provoked. However, hugging and carrying them should not be an issue.

Basically both breeds are similar and its really up to your brother to decide which one he likes best. A white or a brown dog. But both make excellent pets
