I was recenlty badgered online--the harasser said a variety of quite offensive things, ALL of which unwarranted, and uncalled for. When this person became visciously insulting, I told him to "go to Hell." He continued, saying that, because I am atheist, it is "immature" for me to say such a "religious" thing to him.

Everyone I've discussed the matter with, that knows what he said to me, has agreed that being told to "go to Hell" is the least of what he deserves.

So, my question: what do you think of atheists using the phrase "go to Hell?"

I mean "go to Hell" as a figure of speech. If you'd like to know the things he said to me, I'd be perfectly willing to tell you--and I'm fairly certain you'd agree that he deserved to be told such a thing.

And for the record, he told me to "go to Hell" SEVERAL times before I repeated it to him.

Also, when I said it, it WAS meant as an insult.

I think that avowed atheists should insult people in other ways. To say Go to Hell without knowing what it means signifies a true lack of understanding of the curse uttered.

For an idea of what Hell is like, read Bill Weise's Book "23 Minutes in Hell" or go to www.SpiritLessons.com and see his testimony there.

am a believer but ya know what after a while it starts to get real dumb specially when you start getting mail like that, if that person was or is a christian that person has a lot to learn, because christians is not suppose to act that way and it was very foolish on the person side. But at the same time you have to realize not all Christians are as bad as that either, there are the ones who pretty much keeps their mouth shut a nice way of putting it. If it would have been me I most likely would have told them to go to hell as well, being a christian does not make us perfect. I am sure with some of my answers upset people but I am not trying too though, but there are the ones that write in and ask questions or makes really dumb statements for no reason other than they want to start something then maybe I will speak up, and afterwards it gets deleted. but yeah I can understand what you said it I would have said it too most likely..Peace

Directing it at an Atheist means nothing. They know that hell has never been proven to exist. However, to a believer, hell is not a nice place and obviously will be taken as an insult.

Does an atheist "pray" to God when they are on their death bed to go to heaven "if there is one"?

If the answer is yes, then I think it's fine for an atheist to say that, because that may be their final destination...

You never know how things will end up happening, right?

Isn't it amazing how picky people can be? Obviously "go to hell" is a usefull way to get across the fact that you are annoyed. Whether or not you are actually religious is beside the point.

Freedom of speech is a blessing that ALL God's creatures should be able to enjoy!! It's a true Heaven to be able to release our anger and frustration, sending to Hell who have annoyed the Hell out of us!! ;)

The best of luck!! :)

I think you need to concern yourself with more important things, like your own dignity. For a Christian or an atheist to tell someone to go to Hell is immature and ignorant. For the Christian, no on but God can send one to Hel and for the atheist...if God don't exist, neither does hell.

For me...it's Miller time.

I think it's totally appropriate. The only important thing is that the recipient of the insult believes in hell. And he probably does. ;<)

I don't think anyone should wish for anyone else to spend eternity in hell. It's something I could never say to anyone and I feel very strongly about that. I don't care what you believe or don't believe. It's an eternal punishment.

I think you showed a serious degree of restraint. Just block them next time. It annoys the hell out of them when they can't contact you... lol.
