Yes you can. You will need to show your drivers' licenses (for everyone who will drive and they're over 16) and a credit card.

Get the insurance coverage! You'll have peace of mind -- especially if you're driving in and around Toronto!

The rules and regulations are pretty much the same. You can turn right when the light is red (after a full stop, of course). I believe that you can't turn right at a red light in Montreal.

You also have to wear seat belts.

On multi-lane highways: You have to move over into another lane if an emergency vehicle or police vehicle is at the side of the road -- this law was passed recently in Ontario.

U-turns are not permitted unless a sign indicates that it is.

I think that's about it. Welcome and enjoy your visit.

I am Canadian and I rent cars for about 12 weeks last years in a trip in Hawaii, 2 in Puerto Rico, Florida, Nevada and California. I never had one problem. Then Canada and U.S.A. has no barrier about renting a car.

Now about the insurances. I never accepted to pay the insurance and I was o.k. I paid the rental with my visa card (one of the condition) and I tell them that in case of accident or whatever, I will use my own insurance. For that matter, I communicated with my insurer and they gave me a free paper specifying that my insurance are covering rental cars for $40,000. By-the way, you own car has to be fully insured and the driver must be over 25 (in most locations) to avoid to pay such insurance.

Now! I got some extra compulsory insurance of about $9/day in Montreal (Quebec). I don't know for the other provinces but I think that is in Quebec only.

Yes you can. No special rules - you just have to remember that we drive using kilometres per hour instead of miles. :)
