I want to keep a significant amount of water (several gallons) in case of emergency. How do I keep water without it going bad or stagnant? On water bottles there is always an expiration date, is it crucial that I adheed to that? I have those big 5 gallon water holders (for water dispensing machines), is it the same for them? Thanks

Buy the water that is sealed up. Like the 2 gallon plastic jugs from the supermarket. Make sure they stay sealed and keep them OUT of direct sunlight. Also, try to find a place to store them that isn't sweltering hot, if you can. You can buy water purification tablets from most camping/outdoors/sporting goods stores. Boiling the water for several minutes usually works too.
And yes, I'd heed the expiration dates. Just replace the water once a year or whenever it expires. You don't have to waste the old water; When it expires, use it to water your garden or something.

How long can I store bottled water?
Bottled water can be stored indefinitely if it is kept in the proper environment. It should be kept in a dry place, out of direct sunlight. It is also necessary to keep it away from toxic chemicals, such as cleaning agents, solvents, or gasoline. Do not store bottled water in your garage.

Water will be alright for a lengthy period of time. If you need it for an emergency supply, you won't care how it tastes.
