I'm in California, so I'm not sure if this will work for all numbers. But if you want to take a shot, dial 'popcorn' on the phone. You should hear some lady saying saying the time over and over..I don't know about you, but I'm easily entertained...
Oh, and if you're really bored, (once again, not sure it'll work with all numbers), dial the number 0, and wait. It should take you directly to the operator. I didn't know that last time, so it took me to the operator and I didn't know what to say, so the operator was like, 'Hello? Is anyone there? Hello?' and I just hung up really quickly and laughed.

huh! oh ok!! A bunch of useless information. I've known about the popcorn thing for probably 20 years by now i too live in california and anyone that has ever dialed a phone number should know that dialing a '0' will patch you through to an operator. thanks again for the two points

I was just talking to someone re: popcorn and we were wondering if there is a phone charge like dialing 411. I use 1-800-free-411 to avoid the 1.50 chg.

Gee, one of the first things parents teach their kids, when dialing the phone is that zero is OPERATOR. DUH

It did entertain me! Not the call so much, but I'm a recent transplant to CA. I just walked into talk to my hubby (CA native) and asked him about "popcorn". He said yeah, it's real, you never heard of it??? Then while he was laughing he dared me to call it. So, thinking it was a porn number or something, I hesitantly called it. I thought the joke was on me. It was! It was actually the time! My husband turned red laughing so hard at me. "You've never heard of POPCORN?!?!?"

you mean you just figured out that dialing 0 on the phone gets you the operator, have you had your head stuck in the sand or something...........you sound like you need to get a life.......
