Golden Retrievers are terrific with children. Teach him/her as a puppy all the socialization techniques & he will be your best friend for life. :-)
Many blessings, Patti

I would say NO, and I'll tell you why.
A Golden in my neighborhood once attacked a 4 year old for no reason. The kid was just standing there and the Golden jumped on him, pushed him over and was biting the back of the boy's head around the bottom, near the neck, it looked like he was trying to chew the boys head like a raw hide bone. The Golden was shot by local constables after that, and the boy (now 9) still has scars where he was bitten

This proves that not all Goldens are 100% great with children and gentle, loyal and whatever else people say about the breed.

There are good and bad dogs in every breed, but if it comes from a reputable breeder and you train it properly, it should have a good disposition.

You don't mention the age of the kids, though. Our Golden Retriever mix is well-behaved but very high-energy....lots of running, jumping, licking, etc. Goldens are very loving and usually express it in these ways.

So I would think they would be better for kids that are at least school-age, rather than toddlers who are a little more unsteady.

They are excellent dogs to have around kids. When I was little my dad brought home a golden retriever mix and she was just the size of a chihuahua. She's a little on the small side at full grown but she's a wonderful dog! She loved all the kids in my family (cousins, etc) and loved playing with us outside. She is incredibly gentle too. Of course, every dog is different, and you should still watch the kids when they're playing with any dog, especially when they are younger because they may upset it by pulling on it's tail and it may defend itself. It's not being bad it is just naturally for a dog to react to something like that.

Golden Retrievers are one of the most gentle dogs around kids....they would make a great family pet if you have children; especially young children.

Almost all retrievers are good with kids.....but keep this in mind.....a person in my town had a Labrador...he attacked and bit a child and took most of it's mouth when he did..the child had to go through several reconstructive surgeries to correct that..this does not mean all retrievers are like that..most are gentle..but any animal must be watched carefully when children are around...and I could go on and on...but you just have to realize that any dog can be "mean"..or have a behavioral problem..and this wasn't the first time the dog had bitten anyone.......

They would be the first choice for most people among other breeds since they are usually tolerant and patient. And with a good training they can even guide to blind people (ofcourse some other breeds can do it too).
"Every dog" can be aggresive with a lot of reasons. So it is not a very wise thing to leave the children totally alone with any dog. But you can teach them your children are the boss and they should obey them too.

any dog is or isn't good with kids ; it is not the breed ; it is the training invested; a crate up dog or a tied up one ; or one left alone all the time etc is not good for any child; a great adult dog had a good trainer with time, effort, patience and love when a puppy; that and only that is the key to success.
