Six months ago we bought a Havanese puppy. They have a thin, silky hair which is hypo-allergenic and they really don't shed much at all. The are adorable, small sized for females and medium sized for males, are active and love to run and play and are incredibly adorable. Plus they are real clowns. I am so happy we have him.

Australian Cattle dog is the first that came to mind. A shelter dog would also be a good choice; some have a little of everything in them and that is usually really good. As for low maintenance, Greyhounds are great. They have short fur, don't have that doggy odor, and are very sweet and fun to be around. On the downside they are tall, skinny dogs. They could be an option worth exploring, and retired racers are really thankful for a home. They are also active. Try using YahooPets for more information about any dog breed. Good luck!

Jack Russell. They are very active obedient but as any dog, requires lots of training and exercise

Are you sure you're ready to be taking care of a dog at this age? Being 14, my mum said i could only have it if i took care of it. Its commonly heard when a child wants a dog so bad and then once the problems start to settle in, they back out and the parents need to do all the work. Commit yourself to this schedule and dont give it up if you are going to love and care for this dog. A dog requires much more than food, water and exercise. You need to pay for its first 3 shots when its a puppy (Aus $72.50 each) as well has monthly heartworm tablets (Aus $30 for a six pack) and general worm tablets (AUS $15 for a four pack that is taken every 3 months). These costs can add up over the years. Ask your parents if they are willing to spend so much money providing for the dog. If not, if you are old enough to get a job, do it!
Training is an integral park of taking care of any dog. Although small dogs might seem easier to train, they dont! They have a lot more energy to burn which makes it harder for them to concentrate. A jack russell is a medium to small sized dog and is known to be quite active and was bred to hunt, and to think for themselves. They are very clever and keep you on your toes! so if you do decide to get it, thats most likely what you would get. They can also be submissive at times
Don't forget the basic essentials such as toys, food and water bowls, as well as being prepared to take it to the vet when it's sick or injured.
It isnt cheap to care for a dog, I know! I'm broke because of my dog but i wouldnt have done anything to change it if i could. I'm seeing the results and making my dog happy and thats all i want to see.
You really need to think about all these things before considering on getting a dog. It isnt as simple as "Omg that is so cute i want to take it home"
It's a lot tougher
Good Luck

A mutt would probably be your best bet. Something in the lab mix range, the mis should be a smaller breed of course...
If you need something low maintenance though try to stay away from small terriers, poodles, and poms. They are a bit high energy. Smart yes, but high energy. I agree with the shelter idea, thats where I have gotten all my animals, and never had bad luck. Just make sure you know the breeds you are choosing.
Good Luck!

if you want an obedient dog it will be high maintanence.
you have to work it everyday in a civil and humane way.
any active dog will require twice as much loving work.
please do not get a dog just so you can name it something stupid and to say you have a dog. if youre not going to be realistic from the start, go watch a vet put an unwanted animal down. just saying you have to "settle" for what you dont really want -proves you shoud not get any because you are NOT ready to own one.

I agree don't worry about breed so much go to the shelter and ask them about the dogs they have ask about their temperment and how each individual dog acts and adopt one from ther instead of buying a specific breed there are too many dogs out there in shelters who need homes.

why not check out some local shelters? lots of different breeds and mixes. keep in mind, different breeds require different levels of activity. even a mix. check out a dog dictionary and learn about the different breeds or even go to a local dog show. good luck

I suggest a Basenji, medium to small breed non barker and short coated, smart, quick learners, low maintainance breed. great companions. Check with www.akc.org to see the breed. and even find a local breeder.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels! I have two, and they're so sweet. They're littler dogs, but theyre not as little and annoying as chihuahuas. They're very laidback but they're very affectionate. Sometimes i'll let my dogs outside with the gate open, and they don't even leave. I never had to train them or anything, they're just naturally that loyal and obedient. :]
