Qualifying was rained out yet again and nascar.com is showing Smith 10th on the starting grid. How is this possible? I know he's in the 01 car which he splits time w/ Mark Martin, but Martin is 15th in points.

Owner points, not driver points. The 01 car is 10th in owner points.

Hi,
The reason that Smith started 10th is because NASCAR sets the field by OWNER points. And since Reagan Smith and Mark Martin split the car; the car itself always gets points regardless of who drives it. So therefore the #01 car is 10th in owner points and that's how Reagan Smith started 10th.

The others users are absolutely correct. The field is set by owner's points, not driver's points. Since the 01 (Martin/Smith) is tenth in owner's points, they start up there. Bad thing is that he'll probably drop through the field like a brick out a 10-story window.

NASCAR should probably ammend the rainout rule to give priority to not only owner's points, but also driver's points, so in an instance like this, a rookie with such little experience will not get a prime starting spot due to luck.

It's called OWNER POINTS for starting positions. They don't base rained out quals on driver points.

Yep, this is based on owner pts..Nascar has got to fix this rule on rain outs...Plus Reagan Smith is a crappy driver he'll probably crash the guys right by him..
