I have a 1-year-old female Shih tzu and she is in her first heat. For the past week or so, she has become very destructive and aggressive. I was wondering if this could be the cause or if she is just becoming a little troublemaker. My other dog, a male Shih tzu, was never destructive like this one. I'll come home and find things ripped or chewed up, including magazines, CDs, anything she can get her little paws on.

This is where the word "*****" got it's negative connotation. Being spayed would end the behavioral changes caused by the hormonal fluctuations.

Sounds more like a behavior problem from being left alone. and I suggest a training crate to put her in when you go out. Heat , or a female going into season is NOT the usual trait of the season.

Sounds like Shih tzu PMS doesn't it -I think your dog is acting like a naughty little pup- some discipline is in order and a lot more exercise ---ON A LEASH !

Yes, they do! My female dachshund is in heat right now and she is very hard to live with. Irritable, excitable and very short-tempered. It's not like her at all so it was a big tip-off she's in heat.

It might also be more pronounced since this is her first heat.

Why is your dog in heat anyway??? Planning to add to the pet overpopulation and be responaible for homeless animals suffering and/or dying? Sheesh, get her fixed and quit being selfish and irresponsible.

She knows there is something different going on in her body , but she doesn't know what, where, why , or how. She is confused. Until it passes help her out, burn the extra energy by extra long walks & back yard tag.

Yes they do. Hormones are hard on all girls, even canine girls. And when female dogs are pregnant, they get really super sweet. It's a very nice time for them.

They shouldn't. A non neutered male seems to get the blunt end of that stick. Spay her.

Of course... they want the strongest mate. the males have to dominate the female to get the prize.
