Is it wrong/harmful? Should I not watch it? I'm not religious, but I am ethical. What do I do?

Enjoy your porn.

I sometimes laugh when I read that porn exploits women, because I have women friends in the business, and they do what they do because it is THEIR CHOICE to make, laugh all the way to the bank, and believe they are DOING A PUBLIC SERVICE. More about that in a minute.

Let me be very up front and honest here so there is no misunderstanding: Some of the women in porn are smart enough to run corporations, be doctors, etc. Asia Carrera is a member of Mensa - the organization for people with high IQs. Annie Sprinkle has her Doctorate. Nina Hartley graduated summa c-u-m laude from the San Francisco State University's nursing school.

There are way too many other women of extremely high intelligence to list here who CHOSE this profession because of the income potential and simply because they enjoy what they are doing - you can check them out yourself if you're interested. Why blame them or think they are being disrespected for taking advantage of a highly lucrative opportunity which WE AS A SOCIETY support wholeheartedly to the tune of over 10 billion annually? The "porn exploits women" and the "Porn causes deviant activity" myths are simply tired attempts of anti-porn groups and individuals to sway the public perception of porn in the direction of THEIR beliefs - nothing more or less because it DOESN'T exploit women and HAS NEVER BEEN STATISTICALLY PROVEN to instigate deviant behavior.

If you're interested, email me and I'll send you a copy of a response Nina Hartley wrote herself regarding just how "exploited" she felt; I can't find the link, but have it in text.

Also, if you desire to do so check out this link for a simple overview of the industry:

Now, onto the theory as to why porn can be considered a beneficial part of society: I've been typing all day already, so you get the nuts and bolts of the concept without too much detail. Sorry.

We all have needs, and they will be met one way or the other. You may have a willing partner, and you may not. If you don't, then rather than go out and affect others (like innocent girls in the event of rape), you instead go inside and watch porn. Your quest for a little fun is filled vicariously, and everyone is happy. In other words, you have watched porn actors who are willing to have sex in front of a camera so you can live through them, have a thrill, and no one but you is affected. No harm - no foul. If, in the event that you HAVE a partner and watch porn together, all it does is enhance the relationship and possibly teach you something new. That simple. End of story.

YOU ARE NOT DISRESPECTING WOMEN BY VIEWING PORN! If you are not one of the very few who can't control his emotions and urges and actually goes out and mistreats a woman because of what he sees on video, then whom have you hurt? Whom have you seen that is exploited? It is certainly not these porn actresses!

One last thing to think about: Blaming porn for the number of rapes, mistreatment of women, etc by the small percentage of our populace makes no more sense than blaming everyone with a driver's license for the few who go out and drive drunk, speed, or otherwise drive carelessly. Should the right to drive therefore be relinquished for everyone because we POTENTIALLY ALL might drive drunk, speed, or otherwise drive carelessly? While you're thinking about this, enjoy your porn! ;-)

It's harmful to you because it's a substitute for reality. Like a kid who has no friends but sits and watches cartoons. The problem is that for some reason it makes men worse lovers instead of better. I've never seen anything onscreen that I can't do better in person. So I always wonder, why are we watching? Why aren't we Doing? Porn is like junk food: you keep reaching for more because your body isn't satisfied. If you're still capable of deep satisfaction, you'll find that when you are, you won't need porn. (And don't go back to it just out of habit! It will always be there! But, for losers!)

It's not disrespectful to women. The girls in porn are perfectly capable of NOT being in porn. They choose to because they want to get on the TV. Anybody that says different is playing the victim game.

Granted there are some pornos that play to domination of women and making them subservient, but that is because they are usually playing to a genre and/or a fetish group.

If you like porn, watch it.
If you can't do anything else but watch porn...Get help.

Seek out porn that is not disrespectful to women.

There are several awesome movies that show women in a positive light, as sexually empowered, respected by their partners, etc., etc.. There are great production companies ran by women, and those that try to make films for women and/or couples to watch.

I suggest Comstock Films- documentary-style movies of real-life couples who have a short interview about their romance, how they met, their sex lives, etc., etc., and then they have real, passionate sex- the kind of beautiful, sacred sex you can rarely find in porn between strangers. You can find more about the films here:

Other names to look for would be Tristan Taormino, Shine Louise Houston, Candida Royalle, Betty Dodson, and so on and so on.

Hope that helps!

Morally, you shouldn't watch porn because it represents a sin (sexual activity outside of marriage) which you are encouraging and participating in by watching.

Is it demeaning to women? No more so than it is to the man in the scene. Those women are being paid well for their performance.

By the way, there's a big difference between being 'ethical' and trying to be 'politically correct'. You are the later of the two.

The women get paid to do it, as do the men. Watch the more upper-class stuff as opposed to the really cheesy stuff. Then you can probably bet those women enjoy what they're doing. I'm against it, but for unusual reasons. But I am able to reason with myself that there's really not much wrong with it. If you like it, go for it.

I used to work at an "Adult Business" and let me just say this: Those who THINK those women are getting "abused," your slightly wrong. Some of the dudes get abused too. The women draw good money in that area of business.

And most people in this world have watched porn. No one can really say they haven't.
